Balakia (Balak: Balaaçik Balâçik [bɑˈla.t͡ʃɪk]), officially the Balak Federation, is a country in Vaniua. With around 57 million inhabitants, Balakia is the X most populous country in Vaniua. Balakia is bordered to the west by Komania and Gushlia, to the north by Kaatkukia, and to the east by Amaia and Khambvan. It is the homeland of the Balak people, a Vaniuan ethnic group, among other groups. The country's capital is Sâcar, a major economic hub in Eastern Vaniua and the largest city in Balakia. Despite this the country's economy as a whole is still developing, and Balakia is classed as a developing country, benefitting from a nominal GDP of around $876.7 billion and a GDP per capita of $15,312.

In 1952, following the installation of a Kúúlist puppet government under the Helsonian Union, the Union of Shomosvan was established.

Following the collapse of Shomosvan in 2001 the new provisional government of Balakia began acting on a policy of "Dekúúlification" which saw the beginning of a slow process of democratisation and privatisation under the influence of Shohuan. This process was temporarily halted after the outbreak of the Balak-Gushli War, though as the conflict slowed down the process of Dekúúlification resumed progress, albeit slowly.

Etymology

The word Balakia comes from the ethnonym for the Balak people, Balâk, itself being derived from the name of Balâhak. The unofficial native name for the country, Balâçik, has a similar etymology, descending from Old Balak Balâhak-kik "river of Balâhak." This name is only used to refer to the country in external affairs; internally the name refers to the state of Balâçik. The country's official internal name, Yelşem, originates from a Koman poetic name for the region, Qershem ("land of the Yerec"), in reference to the Balak mythological creature.

History

Prehistory

Classical Antiquity

Kothlen Horde

Great Horde

... During the Sunset Rebellion, most Balak nobles rose up against the ruling X dynasty; the only two noble families not to partake in this event were the Seğârens and the Zôkamâs. The revolutionaries were quickly crushed by the Great Horde's army, and were replaced with loyal Khamv nobles in the aftermath of the conflict.

Balak and Khamv Kingdoms

Aside from the Zôkamâ and Seğâren dynasties, who at this point ruled over the kingdoms of Zonduş and Seğâduş respectively, many of the kingdoms now a part of Balakia were under the rule of Khamv dynasties, and X.

By 1864 Kamât II of Zonduş had united the majority of the western Balak kingdoms under one crown; his only remaining opposition consisted of the Khamv-dominated kingdoms to the east.

... On November 10th 1866 Kamât proclaimed the founding of a united Balak Empire. Following this he was awarded the title Balâkpâş, meaning "father of the Balaks," a title which he is still referred to as today.
