Yashuhay

Etymology

Inherited from Classical Shohue ngalóngolka ("flower garden/patch"), a compound of ngalókan ("tillage") and ngolkan ("flower"). Some scholars argue the compound dates back to Proto-Ounyu, which might help explain the differences in noun class and related analogical processes between this word and the reflexes of its components (haóong and hóong. If this is the case, Yuhambirrugu ngúungukk ("greenhouse") would be a possible cognate. Even in this case, the stress placement indicates the compound was still transparent in Classical Shohue times.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /aˈwoha/
