Yashuhay

Etymology

From Classical Shohue pawalo (“accident”) from Proto-Ounyu *pa-rwa-rla (“product of having happened” product.NZ-do-NVOL), ultimately from Proto-Ngerupic *řwa (“play”). The contemporary form is still somewhat transparent, parsable as pa-a-w (product.NZ-do-PASS), a deverbal of an obsolescent verb -á-. The second meaning seems to be a result of reanalysis of the meaning after the semantic drift of the suffix, interpreting the word as the result of "getting done" rather than non-volitional happenstance.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈpaːw/

Noun

páaw 9/10 A (plural apáaw)

  1. accident, unpredicted consequence
  2. slight, a deliberate act of neglect or discourtesy
