Násignettu (Achiyitqan pronunciation: [násɪgnɛt:u]) is a small village in northwestern Achiyitqana, notable mainly as the birthplace of Kiinnum. Named for the prolific growth of rock tripe (a favoured food of caribou) in the area, Násignettu is nevertheless principally a fishing village. Despite its small size it is the largest settlement in its county and seat of the local government.

History

There is no indiation of pre-human usage of the site by vodholk, but it has been continually inhabited by humans since at least the fifth century CE. Like many Achiyitqan villages, Násignettu likely originated as a seasonal settlement or trading post some time earlier.

Early in the seventh century, Kiinnum was born in Násignettu. In the 670s ey returned home, founding the small Násignettukisseqitt, one of the first hospitals in Achiyitqana, which remained open until 1011.

Economy

88% of the villagers earn a living by fishing and sealing during the open season, and most others work in shipbuilding, trade, and other fishery-adjacent sectors. Communal whaling expeditions occur once or twice a year. Since 1998 a high-efficiency hydroponic greenhouse has been in operation to help supply the dietary needs of Násignettu and outlying smaller villages, employing a few dozen locals and receiving some government funding. There is also a small tourism industry focused around the former Násignettu hospital, which now serves as a museum of early medicine.
