Onterin (Kessadian: Wohneterhéja [wɔhnɛtɛɹxijʌ]), officially the Republic of Onterin, is a country located smack in the center of Sahar, located where the Equator and Prime Meridian cross, bordering the Taanttu Sea to the west and north, Utol to the northeast, Sortiec and the miniature mountain nation of Harosa to the east, and Kedros to the south. This country speaks three national languages, Kessadian, Sortjecjan, and Tienndu (this is the only other country where Sortjecjan is spoken as a national language, apart from Sortiec).

Etymology

The country name in Kessadian, Wohneterhéja, stems from words of the language that translate to "Land of High Sky" when ordered right. (wohn = sky, nete = high, aer = of, rhéja = land)

History

For a large chunk of Onterin's history before CE 1000, it had been under the rule of the Vadesian Kingdom. As it finally broke away in 1077, it became known as the Kingdom of Kessadia, with its capital at Tédetá, and Gégoann Tójnær as its king, effectively starting the Tójnær Dynasty which would last until the creation of the Republic of Kessadia in 1823. This Kessadia had only the west coast of what is now Onterin and Kedros's exclave. After the independence of Kessadia, it had continuously fought many wars of its former holder until its former holder collapsed, then it just fought with its neighbors. A Kessadian historian mentions that "the king always waged wars because that's what he thought would strengthen his army; all it did was just make his army less allegiant to the king until one day they snuck into the king's room and beheaded him, giving the crown to his son, which the army thought would be better than the king just passed. They were wrong." because he followed in his father's footsteps and continued to strain the army some more, likely as punishment for beheading his father.

Kessadian Colonialism

In the 1500s began the rise of Kessadian colonialism, a new chapter in Kessadia's history. It would colonize many small islands as a merchant empire and even land a small Borosan land colony, called Cegja. It was an effort to get the Ekuosian kingdom rich and it effectively did just that, trading with the Bavkirs, Saras, and even Fals, whom they have an amiable friendship even to the day (citation pending). This merchant empire would not last long though, as towards the 1700s began the decline of it, finally ending when the last of its colonies was sold off to the newly-formed state of Letzia around 1850.

Modern Day

In 1817 began a revolutionary war that would end in 1823 to dispose the kingdom and install a presidential republic in Kessadia, also granting independence to the state of Harosa. Following around the 1850s, it then united with the adjacent nation of Agwetcen to form the Republic of Onterin, one of the first actual republics at that time due to the then president of Kessadia inheriting the throne of Agwetcen (boy I wonder where we've seen that). In the Great Ekuosian War, it was at first neutral until Letzian fascists took over after being expelled from Letzia, to join the Unity side, and after that it would fall under Helsonian occupation and a puppet state that would last until about 1971, where it was released from the grasps of Kúúlism. Today it shares great relations with its neighbors Sorteic, Harosa, and Letzia, though Cerman not quite because of the Helsonian shenanigans and Kedros not as much as it recognizes the exclave of Kedros to belong to Onterin.
