The name 'Otofu' came from the Kamikio-Monic word ''ottaoffu'' (wet), which the wetlands in which it is located in.
The original name of the area when it was discovered by the Kamikians was ''Otoihofa'' (lit. group of waters); ''Otofu'' was the capital of the then-territory. It was in the early 11th century when the inhabitants began to use the term for the whole region.

Eventually Ësnvøërvërg was renamed to the Duchy of Otofu. It became the capital of Otofu until the nation united with the neighboring Duchy of Peccy (Pekha), wherein the capital was moved to Ony. Otofu (Monyo: Otofu /ʌtʌse/), also known as Otoce, is the largest populated urban area of the northern region of Yakormonyo and the country itself. This city serves as the capital of the nation since 2020, when it replaced the temporary capital Onyoto.
