The Balak-Gushli conflict is the ongoing struggle between the countries of Balakia and Gushlia that has its roots in the mid-20th century. The origins to the conflict can be traced back to the unification of the two countries under the Union of Shomosvan, and subsequent border changes by the central government. The conflict has been ongoing for almost 15 years, although it is currently on standby following the controversial coronation of Zôçey Seğâren as the Great Khan of Gushlia.
Tensions began to build up as soon as both countries gained their independence, and erupted in 2002 when Gushlia declared war on, and invaded Balakia.
Background and History
Union of Shomosvan
Shortly after the end of the Great Ekuosian War in X a Kuulist coup backed by the Helsonian Union(?) forced the monarchy to seek refuge in Komania and led to the establishment of the short-lived Gushli People's Republic(?). After a series of negotiations the nation united with neighbouring Balakia, which had undergone a similar coup(?), forming the Union of Shomosvan. In 1966, as part of a series of wider alterations, the border between the Balak and Gushli republics(?) was redrawn to better account for ethnic and linguistic differences; the eastern borderlands of Gushlia were ceded to Balakia, forming the basis for Balakia's modern claim to the land.

Post-independence

Following the independence of Gushlia in X and subsequent collapse of the Union of Shomosvan in 2001 the first free elections were held in the country; the Monarchist Party(?) won and the previously exiled monarchy was invited back into Gushlia in 2002, with Sagam II ascending to the throne and declaring himself the Great Khan of Gushlia. The newly crowned Great Khan rejected the current borders and called for a return to the pre-1966 arrangement. X.

Current Ceasefire
On X, 2018, Sagam II was assassinated by X. Following the controversial ascension of Balak president Zôçey Seğâren to the Gushli throne as Zôçey I a ceasefire was called, set to last for as long as it took for negotiations and proper peace talks to be held.
