This article addresses the policy for copyright and other intellectual property (IP) rights for materials created for or otherwise appearing on the CWSP Wiki.

Information for copyright holders

CWS Planet is a completely not-for-profit semi-open collaborative creative venture. External works (mostly images) are used for illustrative purposes only. We invoke Fair Use regulations to cover our usage of external IP.

However, if a copyright holder's intellectual property has appeared here, we will comply with direct requests to remove it or otherwise change the way in which it is used and/or attributed. We can be reached at conworkshop [at] gmail [dot] com.

What content can appear here

Failure to follow these rules will result in your content being removed and repeated offenses may result in loss of uploading and/or editing privileges.

  1. All content must comply with CWS Planet:Policy.
  2. You are free to add any content which you, solely, produced.
  3. You are free to add any content which is co-created by others who have agreed to have it appear on the Wiki.
  4. You are free to add any content which you did not create but hold primary IP rights over (such as art pieces you personally commissioned). Although not (usually) mandatory in this case, we recommend giving attribution to the original artist anyways (it's good manners).
  5. If you do not have IP rights over a work, you must:
    1. Ensure that the content is either in the public domain, was published under a Creative Commons license, or that its usage justifiably falls under Fair Use regulations.
    2. Give full attribution to the original creator.
      1. This should include the creator's name (or other identifier, such as a web handle), direct link to the creator's website (if possible), and the exact source page (if the content is digital).
      2. For files, this should appear in the summary section of the file page.
      3. For composite images, this should include attribution for each image used.
      4. For text, you should include inline attribution (an exception to our "No Meta" guideline).
    3. If no original creator can be found, and the content is digital, link to the original source. If the content is not digital, create an attribution that seems reasonable to you, or ask staff for advice.
      1. If the original source for an image is unknown, you can try hunting it down with reverse image searches (e.g. tineye). Alternatively, try to find a new image, or at the very least, a disclaimer that you are not the original creator.
    4. Comply with any requests from the original creator to remove the content.

Intellectual property rights of CWSP contributors

When you contribute to this wiki, you agree to the following:

  1. Users retain IP rights over work they contribute to CWSP Wiki, with the following limitations:
    1. CWSP Wiki has the right to host and share any text written on the Wiki and files uploaded to it. This right continues even if/after the creator's involvement in the project ceases, unless they personally remove the content or explicitly ask CWSP Wiki staff for its removal.
    2. Other CWSP users have the right to modify each others' contributions (in line with CWS Planet:Policy), including both articles and files. All contributing users have IP rights over the section(s) of work they contributed (as verifiable on History pages), or hold shared IP with the original creator when work is indivisible (e.g. on images).
  2. The original creators of CWSP content may host, share, or otherwise use and modify their own IP elsewhere as they please.
  3. If the IP rights of a CWSP contributor are violated by an external party, they have the right to pursue actions against the violator(s) as they please.
  4. Contributors may choose to waive some or all of their IP rights by adding CC or other license.
  5. Contributors may choose to transfer some or all of their IP rights to the CWSP Wiki or any of its users.

Please note that there are limitations to what can be considered IP and therefore protected by copyright law (although this is not always particularly well defined). "Ideas and information", individual words, and languages and scripts themselves (including conlangs and conscripts) are considered inherently part of the public domain and cannot be copyrighted. However, works revolving around these are considered IP.

For example, for conlangs, works such as a written Grammar, prose or poetry written in or featuring the language, audio or audiovisual recordings of the language in use, a specific font file, or images which include usage of a conscript, are all IP.
