Etymology

Eshniki’s name means “Gate of God”. Possible etymological constructions leads to Proto-Western-Vaniuan *ʒanikki “entrance, doorway, gate” and either *ewi:wo “God of the Steppe, God of Game”, hypothetically named for the location of the city, or *ejazzag “God of Creation”, which is usually cited in documents and tradition as proof of the city truly being the “Gate of God”. Come etymological theories say the original name was *eʃom- “to be in horseback” and *ʒanikki (*eʃomʒanikki, which could have changed to *eʃanikki and then later to *eʃnikki), since the area was once known as a rest stop for travelers using horses. Another theory is that the city could be named from the Sikowads that used to live in the area before the Uymmostadis, as evidenced in artifacts of pottery, tools, and fabrics dated hundreds of years before the arrival of ethnic Uymmostadis.

History

It is well known that around the Eshniki steppe was inhabited sometime around 1300 BCE by the Sikowads, a people known for their artistry, craftsmanship, and seafaring in the surrounding areas of Lake Melkanchuta. The ethnic Uymmostadis came and captured the area around 450 BCE. The settlement was used as a trading post and a rest stop for travelers, with a few inns and stations for horses and other traveling creatures to eat, drink, and sleep whilst on their journey.
