The Free City of Jaege (Jaegian: Jaege [ʝeːgɐ]) is a city-state in northeastern Atsiq and the main hub for Alpic trade on the continent. When the Empire dissolved, it was the capital of the short-lived Jaegian Kingdom, an attempt by northern nobles to form their own successor state. The kingdom was almost immediately drawn into a bloody civil war following its heavy-handed treatment of demands for autonomy by several ethnic and racial minorities, such as Soral-speaking humans, and collapsed during the 1860s with the City of Jaege declaring itself an independent state governed by the merchant oligarchy. Nowadays the Free City is a bustling metropolis that has transitioned to a democratic, liberal government and continues to experience a steady influx of immigrants from the rest of Atsiq.

Etymology

History

The city of Jaege was founded in 1420 during the Imperial colonisation of North Atsiq and initially served as a base for exploring the northern coastline, quickly establishing itself as a major commercial and political centre in the region. Until the eighteenth century, "Jaege" referred only to the eastern of two settlements on the Drazech Strait, which were merged into a single city in 1738. Its position allowed it to easily control the trade flow through Lake Drazech, furthering the development of an affluent urban elite that had begun to exercise considerable influence in Imperial politics by the mid-17th century. The City of Jaege formed the capital of the imperial province of Cis-Estacia, which covered territories that today belong to the Thargo-Qotsian union, Siqinni and the Republic of Jaege.

Government

The ruling class of the Free City, much like with other Atsiq trade centres, has always been characterised by mercantile might rising to political influence and having this recognised by subsequent ennoblement of its most powerful merchants. What sets it apart is the absence of a monarchy; in Jaege, no single merchant family ever managed to establish themselves as hereditary rulers. The city's instutitions underwent democratisation long before any other country, and today Jaege is the only true parliamentary democracy on Atsiq apart from the Thargo-Qotsian union. It has known universal suffrage since 1916, when humans were granted the right to vote; the voting age has been lowered multiple times over the next decades and is now at 26 for dalar and 19 for humans.

Language

Jaegian is a West Osveraalic language mutually intelligible with Ozarian and to a lesser degree with Kepran. It is the sole official language of the Free City; in daily life, Soralic and Siqian are also present due to the large immigrant communities. The first foreign language for most Jaegian students is Ozarian, as with most other Atsiq countries.
