Gøtüxür (Atruozan: /gø.t̪̻y.k͡s̪yr/) is a city of approximately 20 000 people in soutern Translira, situated on the _____ Channel that separates the Unnsvlen Sea to the north, and the Chitsonawe sea to the south. It is the southernmost city above 20 000 people in the world, and the largest city in Translira's tundra regions. It serves as the capital and administrative center for the region of _____ and is the world's southernmost international port. Ethnically, the city is mostly Draklon, at around 85%, with the significant bulk of the remainder being Grenic. The majority language is Atruozan, with around 28% of the population speaking Texunel (a Draklon language mostly found in Osteria) as their mother tongue. Around 55% of the adult population (those above 16 years of age) is fluent in both languages, which are quite intelligable to one another, with an estimated 80% being able to hold a simple conversation in both. Gêtuxur experiences both the midnight sun in the summer and polar night in the wintertime. The city is headed by the leader of the Kajiléngès tribe, of which nearly all of the citizens of the city and surrounding areas are a part of.

Etymology

The name litterally means "big channel" or "great channel". It was named that due to its location on the large channel that separates the Unnsvlen Sea and the Chitsonawe sea.

History

Geography

Climate

The city lies well south of the Antarctic Circle, and thus, due to its extreme southern latitude, as well as the cold oceanic current that flows to the north of it in the Unnsvlen Sea and the complete freezing of the sea and channel around the city each winter, it experiences a tundra climate (ET). Lying south of the tree line, there are no trees that grow near the city, however, some rare few low-lying shrubs can be found. The summer temperatures are moderated slightly by it's coastal location. The summers are short and very mild, with only one month reaching an average high above 10°C, whereas the winters are long and harsh, with the average temperature being nelow freezing for 9 months of the year, and the coldest 2 months' average temperature being below -30°C. This allows for snow cover to exist for the large portion of the year.

Another of the importances lies simply in the wind patterns of the area. Because of the northward winds coming from around Southern Ystel, frigid arctic winds blow over the flat, barren landscape and creates some extreme windchills in the wintertime, making taking lots of caution when going outdoors in the dead of winter necessary. This also causes snow to be blown up, and can also lead to blizzards, limiting visibility significantly.

Light and Darkness

Due to its extreme southern latitude, being situated approximately 300km south of the antarctic circle, Gøtüxür experiences both the midnight sun and polar night, which at the city core are roughly the values at sea level, due to the lack of mountains or hills large enough to notably affect sunshine's ability to reach the city. The midnight sun lasts from 21 November to 23 January (64 days) and polar night is experienced between 31 May to 13 July (44 days). As the sun never gets below 6 degrees below the horizon during polar night, only polar twilight is experienced.
