Throughout Sahar's history, sailing has been a key form of propulsion that allowed greater mobility than travel over land and facilitated a number of historical and prehistoric population migrations, expansions, and explorations. Notably, the [[Asuranesian languages|Asuranesian peoples]] and [[Saru-Asuran languages|Saru-Asuran peoples]] utilised sailing early in their histories to expand to islands far beyond their homelands on what were likely the first true ocean-going vessels, the Asuranesians spreading from [[ South Nagu|southwestern Nagu]] across the [[Asura Ocean]] to as far north as [[Atameng]] and as far west as [[x]] near the eastern coast of [[Ystel]], whilst the Saru-Asurans expanded eastwards from [[Puzimm]] to the island continent of [[Lahan]], then southwards to [[Jute]] and later Ystel. This early sailing technology had a profound effect on later migrations as the [[Xuni Migration Period]] and [[Lahiri Migrations]] were both significant historical periods of maritime expansion, facilitated by sailing technology acquired by [[Mañi language|Mañi peoples]] from the Asuranesian [[Cananganam|Cananganamese people]] of [[Nagu]], and by the [[Lahiri|Lahiri peoples]] from the Saru-Asuran [[Daleic languages|Daleic peoples]] of Puzimm. Many prominent empires and thalassocracies throughout history also heavily utilised sailing to expand, trade, and consolidate power in conquered regions, in particular those of [[Ekuosia]], [[Soltenna]], and Nagu and [[Upper Boroso]], such as the [[Letsatian Empire]], [[Terminian Empire]], [[Saruan Empire]], [[Qonklaks]], [[Forian Kingdom]], [[First Cananganamese Empire]], [[Great Dhweran Empire]], and [[Bavkir Empire]].

Asuranesian peoples were among the first to develop sailing technology, sailing from what is now Cananganam by vessels with outriggers or catamarans, often with crab claw sails, which enabled the [[Asuranesian Migrations]] at around 3000-1500 BCE across the [[Izro Strait]] and along Cananganam's southern coast into the islands of [[Maritime Southern Nagu]], and thence to [[Asuranesia]], coastal eastern Nagu, and coastal northwestern Boroso, as well as to the [[X Islands]] of the [[X Bay]], and thence northwards to what is now [[x]] and [[Sarsa]]. They travelled vast distances of open ocean in outrigger canoes using navigation methods such as stick charts.
The role of sailing in Asuranesian history is significant, but notably differed among cultures.

Canana-based peoples spread crab-claw rigged proa outrigger canoes through Nagu and they crossed into Boroso and the Draconics before reaching Akulanen

so anywhere between roughly 2000 and 1500 BCE works as a time for littoro-marianic expansion - to clarify, PLM speakers were already distributed across maritime southern nagu starting from about 2000 BCE so those dates are really for the period when the dialects can be said to have separated into distinct daughter branches with Proto-Marianic being a thing around 1500 BCE at the earliest

The proa style boats reached Mañi-speaking peoples in Akulanen proper by around 700 BCE, leading the Mañi expansion in the 6th C BCE.
