Izind (Mañi į̀zįndni /ɪ̃̀ðɪ̃́ndni/ "tower", Maypaw dxínch /dʒínt͡ʃ/) is a 2-player Xuni card game of the competitive patience class, played with Xuni-suited playing cards.

Rules

Players compete to be the first to build a tower. At the start, each player has 3 lanes, two of which hold the 1 of some suit (dealt randomly at the start of the game) and the third of which holds a wildcard. (Tokens or coins may be used for this, or the slot may be left empty.)

Players draw hands of 3 cards from the deck and must play a card on one of the towers, either theirs or their opponents. In order to be a valid play, the card must be one number higher than the card currently at the top of the tower, and must have either the same suit, or the next suit in the order bat → tapir → snake → shark → bat. A 2 of any suit may be played on top of the wildcard. The white elephant can be played on any card, and any card can be played on it (including cards of a lower number than cards already played in the tower). The black elephant can be played on any card, however, no cards may be played on it.

If a player has no valid plays, then they may discard their hand and draw a new hand up to 2 times per turn. If they still have no valid plays, they must pass. A player may pass 3 times per game; if they pass a 4th time, they automatically lose.

When the deck is empty, the entire discard pile is shuffled and becomes the new deck.

A player wins when they have completed a tower, by playing a 10 on top of it. Some rules allow elephants to complete a tower as well; there are also rule variants in which the white elephant completes a tower but the black elephant does not.

Variants

The game can also be played with maunwe cards; in that case, players have 5 lanes and must complete 3 out of their 5 towers. The devil card has the same role as the black elephant; it can be played on any card but cannot be played upon.
