Jaihup (/ˈdʒi:hu:p, -ʊp/; Cathan: Jiihyxp []) officially the United Kingdom of Jaihup (formerly the United Kingdoms and Melquian Territory of the Imperial Cathan Domain), is a sovereign nation in western Parshita and the second most populous country on Sahar, with a population of around 315 million. Jaihup is bordered by the Parshitan Sea to the south, Melqui to the west (with whom it also shares maritime borders), xxxx to the east and xxxx to the north. It also shares maritime borders with Amaia, Balakia and xxxx.
Jaihup is a semi-constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The current monarch is Queen Mbayni I who has reigned since 1974 and is the first queen of modern Jaihup, succeeding her father King Inrah II. The capital of Jaihup is Kumba, a growing metropolis with an urban population of more than 14 million. Other major urban areas in Jaihup include the city state of Potu, the economic heart of the country, the sprawling conurbations of Gahan and Ayndi, and Uonna, the 'City of the Valley' - a huge mountainous complex that was the capital of the xxxx Empire that formerly ruled southern Jaihup. Jaihup is made up of 18 states, each with varying degrees of autonomy and devolved administrations based in their capitals. Potu is the only city state in Jaihup and exhibits a greater degree of autonomy than any other city, having its own governing body (the Council of 12) and the ability to veto certain laws set by the Government of Jaihup, even those set by the monarch should the Council rule that these laws threaten the unique cultural and economic situation of Potu.
The region which Jaihup occupies has been inhabited for millenia and is very culturally and ethnically diverse with two language families and an isolate being indigenous to the nation. The creation of Jaihup resulted from the conquests of the Kingdom of Hakar which successfully unified the warring states and kingdoms of the region into the Grand Cathan Empire. This empire ruled for almost 200 years until the Great Ekuosian War and the subsequent xxxx war where Melqui declared independence. Following this, the empire relinquished its imperial status and became the modern day Kingdom of Jaihup.
