Liosol (Broad Tolec: Lnoecoli [ɲœ:toli] or Lnoecolhy [ɲœ:tojә]), officially the Sovereign Kingdom of Liosol (Broad Tolec: Sanem delan Lioestolhy), is a unitary semi-parliamentary constitutional monarchical federation stretching from Lake Soltenna to the Gelög Sea. It is the motherland of the Alotol people, and many other non-native groups. According to the 2018 census, the population is 94,629,447, with 7.3 million of that number being residents of the capital and largest metropolis, Alotol City. The country is a member of the Soltennan Council, the Charter, and one of the founding members of the International Congress.

The Sovereign Kingdom of Liosol is one of the world's most developed and economically stable nations, with an HDI of 0.921 and a GDP of $2.61 trillion. Its financial opportunities and quality of life earned it a seat in the global financial organization known as the Global 9.

Etymology

The name 'Liosol' is speculated to have come from a corruption of the term 'Layo Stoel' which means 'New Setole', the area North of Lake Soltenna. The term 'Stoel' came from the older form of 'Ysotelnsa', the original name for the Kingdom of Setole; this word is most likely the result of corruption of the first Alotol dynastic surname.

History

Early Alotol civilization

The Alotol people migrated from Northwest Miraria (present-day Aquihia and Waytseia) to Northern Soltenna many years ago, most likely when the Gelög Sea was frozen. Most of the early outposts established in Northern Liosol were coastal ports but around 950 BC migration towards the warmer Central and South areas became more common. Archaeologist finds suggest that the first true 'Southern' - i.e., below the Ngonh River - establishment was built in 849 BC, around the modern-day city of Lanothi. Most villages were isolated during this period and few people traveled far from home, giving local tribal government the most power in the eyes of the people.

Ethnic changes

The Alotol people first formed a separate identity from their Quatic relatives around the early 700's BC. The reason for this was because early contact with the Geumosag (Mroksakh) and Sitr peoples and the marriages between the groups. Recent finds have revealed that the Methic Empire also played a role in the Tolec race, with citations of meetings between officials of the two nations as early as 583 BC.

Ngonh dynasty

Setole

The Kingdom of Setole, which was founded by the Ngonh (or Yonh) Dynasty circa 400 BC, is thought to be the earliest 'Alotol', stretching from modern-day Alotol City to Lake Soltenna. The Ngonh Dynasty fell after the assassination of the king by Ngonh Gollan, his own son. After Belfan (Alotol City) was taken from the Kingdom of Setole by the Kingdom of Layo, Lanothi was established in the North as the new capital of the Kingdom of Setole.

Lao Ngonh

Lao Ngonh, or simply Layo, broke off from the Kingdom of Setole in 121 BC, inhabiting the lower Alotol River and modern day Alotol City.

Pseudo-Sitr Kingdom

Alotol Empire

In 1253 AD, the Kingdom of Setole (the largest of Northern states) established itself as the Alotol Empire. As time went on individual state joined the Imperial Confederation and created "Goncha" or "The Wall" as a defense against the invading Western powers. Attempts to reach out to vassal states such as Hyuy En ultimately failed in this early period, although the nation did manage to liberate some of the North of the country.

The Charter

In a last attempt to keep its imperial legacy in tact and to help its "most favorable neighbor", the Alotol Confederation entered into an union with Methinaqh known as the "Charter for Economic & Cultural Cooperation in the Two Noble Kingdoms."

Liquidation of the Confederation

In 1803 AD, after the 550th anniversary of the confederation was celebrated nine referendums were held to decide the fate of the country. It was argued that states could exit now that the Imperial Age was over, but some of the early states now felt tied, politically and culturally, to Liosol. A few countries left, but most of the empire retained her former territory. The Alotol Empire had devolved into the Kingdom of Liosol.

Interregnum and the Mang dynasty

After a military coup that killed Anthola the IX occured in 1831 the kingdom entered into an interregnum period. Every political faction fought over the future of the country until it was decided that a central monarchy could no longer work. While the nation was a confederation it worked well because there were multiple kings conveying in a court and there was no central place of power. After thinking long and hard the government decided a parliament would be wise as a somewhat feasible replacement to that system. A monarch[1] and prime minister[2] were elected together in the year 1840.

Government

Liosol is a semi-parliamentary system. The incumbent King is head of state but effectively has no power, shifting it to the Prime Minister (along with his cabinet) and House of Status. These two political bodies are voted upon by the people of Liosol every five years. The Prime Minister selects his own cabinet while the House of Status, which is the nation's legislature, is divided up, not by provinces, but by the enumerated votes of the Alotol people.

Liosol is currently made up of [number] political parties. This number, according to housteofstatus.info.ac, is reached by winning at least 20 seats, two election cycles in a row. Alotol election season comes only once every five years. A prime minister and vice minister are elected during this process and the House of Status is appointed by the collective party votes of Liosol's population. The next election is scheduled for 2020.

Banner Bearer Cha Matinh, winner of the 2015 national election, is serving in his third term as 16th Prime Minister of the Sovereign Kingdom of Liosol.

Foreign relations

Liosol maintains relatively peaceful relationships with its Northern neighbors thanks to alliances established via the Charter. The country also participates in the Soltenna Council and is a founding member of the International Congress.

Military

Liosol currently has one of the biggest military budgets in Soltenna. Although the government does not publish documents detailing the military, it is rumored the nation has upwards of 530,000 active servicemen, and between 400,000 to 600,000 in reserves. Despite this high number, Liosol has not been officially involved in a war (as defined by the nation's constitution) since the 50's.

All students are required to serve a minimum of 16 months in military service before acquiring a full-time job. This law has caused recent controversy, especially after the Helsonian Collapse and Qonklese Crisis. Most nationalists consider military service to be a civic duty, while others believe it is a form of discrimination. Activists have tried to overturn this ruling on three separate occasions—the last being in 2008—but were outvoted each time.
