Mordar and Kovatia (Kovat: Morjat ca Kowite), officially known as the Federation of Mordar, Kovatia and Tarvata, is a country located in Western Vaniua. Mordar-Kovatia is bordered to the south by Shohuan and Xonqorot, and to the north-west by Asota. With a population of nearly 55 million people and a GDP value of just over 1 trillion USD, Kovatia is a regional power in Vaniu.

Etymology

It is widely believed that 'Kowite', the native name of Kovatia comes from Old Kovat 'Kowe An-Atai' meaning 'Stretch/Valley of Haven/Safety' most likely meaning that its' inhabitants were safe here from surrounding war.

Mordar-Kovatia is a federal parliamentary republic, with the government divided into legislative, executive and judiciary branches. Mordar-Kovatia had one of the first modern constitutions in Vaniua, the 1885 Constitution (known as the Mayzowa Constitution), which was at the time considered among the most progressive and liberal constitutions on Sahar.Since then, it has adopted 4 different constitutions. The current constitution was adopted in 1998 in the aftermath of the 3 Days War. The Constitutional Court of the Federation rules on matters regarding the Constitution.

The President of the Federation is the head of state, they are elected by popular vote to a six-year term and are limited by the Constitution to a maximum of two consecutive terms. In addition to being the commander in chief of the armed forces, the president has the procedural duty of appointing the prime minister with the consent of the federal parliament. Layza Waşakky of the National Progressive Party is the current president following the 2017 presidential election. The seat of the presidency is Basseyau Palace.

Mordar-Kovatia is split into three constituent countries - Tarvata, Kovatia and Mordar. Tarvata is further split up into 5 Provinces, Kovatia into 19 and Mordar into 8. The Autonomous Region of the Xaiva Islands located about 60 km off the coast technically does not belong to any of the constituent countries but is often included under Kovatia for simplicity's sake. The disputed region of Solama is de facto directly governed from Basseyau, although efforts to make it the 4th constituent country are constantly being made.

Tourism

Tourism is very widespread in Mordar-Kovatia especially along the southern coast of its' territory, in the Xaiva Islands as well as the central highland region. Tourism accounts for about 9% of the total GDP of the country making it one of the largest industries in Mordar-Kovatia.

Ethnic groups

Ethnic Kovats account for more than 80% of the country's inhabitants. Shohuanese people are native to the southernmost tip of the country and are not considered foreign nationals thus being eligible for various benefits such as subsidised healthcare and education fees. Mordar-Kovatia is home to a large community of immigrants from all over Sahar. Many Vaniuans avail of Mordar-Kovatia's lax immigration law to seek a better life not far from home. Most immigrants/refugees in the country come from other Vaniuan nations.

Urbanisation

In total, there are a total of 68 settlements with the status of a city in the territory of Mordar-Kovatia. Only two cities have more than 1 million inhabitants - Basseyau and Kouve Aia.

Language

The official languages of Mordar-Kovatia are Kovat and Tarvatan. All government services are available statewide in the two official languages. However, autonomous provinces may grant official status within the province to a language other than Kovat or Tarvatan. Kovat is the largest mother tongue in Mordar-Kovatia with 84% of the population being native speakers. Shohuanese is the second largest mother tongue with a total of 4.3% of the population being native/bilingual speakers.

Education

Mordar-Kovatia has one of the highest rates of university graduates on Sahar, most notably in scientific, medical and technical subjects. Mordar-Kovatia's capital - Basseyau has a total of 4 Universities and the second largest city Kouve Aia is host to the main campus of Mordar-Kovatia's national university - University of Kovatia. Compulsory education consists of 6 years of primary school, followed by 5/6 years of compulsory secondary schooling depending on several circumstances.

Cuisine

Mordar-Kovatia boasts one of the most renowned cuisines on Sahar. Traditional dishes from all over Mordar-Kovatia such as Páunekka and Keirfola, can now be found all over Sahar. Kovat cuisine includes a great variety of dozens of regional cuisines, each with their main staple dishes/ingredients. Kovat cuisine can be roughly divided into two varieties; Coastal and Upland. Coastal varieties naturally tend to use olive oil for cooking as well as herbs such as rosemary and garlic, meanwhile inland varieties use animal fats and woodier spices such as pepper. Fish is very popular for cooking throughout the country, especially in coastal areas, as well as well-drained lands with numerous rivers. Consumption of pork in the region has traditionally been frowned upon as the pig is seen as a scavenger animal. The inhabitants have been advised against its’ consumption for centuries, however as tradition continues to fade, its consumption is now at an all-time high.
