Lets Save the Short-Faced Bear campaign

In 1979, under the leadership of Hiehtsaŋih Yaavkreis, the NWPS began the campaign Buvvaaņʉsb ķaagŋeild!, or Let's Save the Short-Faced Bear. This campaign used a combination of traditional folklore aimed at older adults and cute animated cartoon PSAs aimed at the young to portray the bears in a positive light. A design contest for the characters in the PSAs was held among the urban schools. Over 1400 children submitted drawings of the main characters, including the short-faced bear, the reindeer, the walrus, the wolf, and the elk. Animation was outsourced to a studio [name TBD] in Lugida.

The NWPS successfully petitioned the government to place the species under protection in 1980. This caused some tension among reindeer herders in the southeast, who felt that the new policies were threatening their ability to defend their herds.
