Ngeyv names are composed of two elements, a matronymic and a given name. The matronymic, formed from the mother's name with a genitive -h suffix, precedes the given name. The matronymic is only used in situations where the full name is given; otherwise a Ngeyv person is referred to only by their given name. For example, Ķielsigih Vieʔaap would be referred to as Vieʔaap in situations where only a person's surname would be used (e.g. in the text of news or encyclopedia articles). He would also be referred to as Vieʔaap informally, or in casual conversation.

Origins

Ngeyv given names tend to be of two syllables, although sometimes names comprise one or three syllables. Many Ngeyv names, such as Laataa and Tounap, are of unknown origin. These names tend to be gendered, although there is no clear phonological association with masculine or feminine names. About half of all Ngeyv personal names have an identifiable origin, usually in the name of a plant or animal, such as Siidgie Snowy Owl or Qaagñi Aspen. These names are, as a rule, unisex.
