Nithalosia (IPA: /nɪθalaʊziʲa/, Native language: Niđalosia, IPA: /niθalosi.a/), officially the Koni yu Niđalosiä, is a country located in the centre of the Šarkunen peninsula. Nithalosia consists of the mainland country split into four states, and the offshore semi-autonomous territory of Seret.

Nithalosia neighbours Laefevia and Edievia to the north, Lesidea and Helsonia to the south, and Edievia to the west. The islands of Xynderland and Exgot lie not far from the north-eastern tip of Seret, and the Netherstream Bridge (Nithalos: Niđakava Keši) joins Eqhan in Seret to Kay in Exgot.

Geography

Rough topographic map of Nithalosia

The geography of Nithalosia varies quite drastically with state. Nithalosia has a large mountain range running diagonally through it called the Ushkeem mountain range (Nithalos: Uškeme). The northern tip of Nithalosian is also mountainous.

The valley that is formed between the north of Nithalosia, and the Ushkeems, is mostly part of the Nithash state. The soil here is very fertile and before settlement, this area was rich in thick vegetation.

South of the Ushkemes the land is much drier, although still very fertile. This area is a large flat plains with very little elevation about sea level. The Da Kavai rivers often cause flooding in the west as this is part of a flood plain.

The coastal area to the east of Nithalosia (Yamvoth state) is largely flat as it decends down to the ocean.

Climate

The north of Nithalosia is in the mountains is very dry and very cold. The valley below however is often very warm, but wet due to weather systems from the ocean becoming trapped in the valley.

South of the Ushkeems, is drier most of the year round, and generally quite mild temperature-wise.

Politics

Government

Nithalosia is a federation of 5 states, which are broken into counties. This means there are four levels of Government within Nithalosia. In order from smallest/lowest in the hierarchy, to highest:

  • County Councils
  • State Government
  • Government of Seret
  • Nithalosian Federal Government

The seats/parliaments of various governments can be seen in the table below:

Government Body City, State
Nithalosian Federal Government Nithash, Nithash state
Nithash State Government Nithash, Nithash state
Koyan State Government Da Kavai, Koyan state
Govtha State Government Govtha, Govtha state
Varta State Government Yamvoth, Varta state
Government of Seret Serhet, Seret state

Administrative divisions

States of Nithalosia, Niđalosiae Hemas

Nithalosia is broken into four (federated) states, and one special state.

Federated States

The four main states are: Nithash state (Nithalos: Niđaš) in the North section of Nithalosia, bordered to the south by the Ushkeem (Nithalos: Uškeme) mountains; Koyan state (also sometimes called Da Kavai) which lies in the western part of the plains to the south of the Ushkeem mountains; Varta state (also sometimes called Yamvoth/Yamvođ) which lies to the east of Nithash on the coast, to the north of the Ushkeems, and is direct access to Seret; and Govtha (Nithalos: Govđa) which is an expansive state in the south of Nithalosia.

Each of the federated states has its own government which is answerable directly to the Nithalosian Federal Government. Each state is also broken into smaller counties for intra-state administrative purposes.

Special State

Nithalosia has a special arrangement with the island of Seret due to the Zagna Pact. Seret is officially a state and therefore protectorate of Nithalosia, however it has more administrative and legislative rights than the other four federated states. This is largely owing to the fact that Seret was once a sovereign nation that agreed to come under rule of Nithalosia, but with limitations.

Seret, like all other states, is also broken up into smaller counties for easier administration. The Seretian Government however is not directly answerable to the Nithalosian Federal Government, but rather works in conjunction with them. This can lead to some contradictory laws being passed - such as as the Sale of Liquor law which sets the minimum age in Nithalosia as 18, but 20 in Seret.

Zara and Tira

Banknotes of the Nithalosian Zara

The currency of Nithalosia is called the Nithalosian Zara (symbol: ℤ; code: NXZ). It was introduced as part of the Zagna Pact joining the nations of Seret and Nithalosia as a joint currency. The previous currency, called the Rakei, remained in circulation alongside the Zara for 5 years after the introduction of the Zara. Seret's previous currency ceased to be used immediately following the introduction of the Zara.

The Zara is broken into 100 Tiras (symbol: t), and is delimited from the Zara using a colon. For example, three Zaras and 40 Tiras would be written ℤ3:40, or ℤ3 and 40t. There are four coins with Tira values circulating in Nithalosia and Seret; these are: 5t, 10t, 20t, 50t. The 1t and 2t coins were discontinued some years ago.

There are also seven banknotes with Zara values in circulation (you can see these on the right), and they are: ℤ1, ℤ2, ℤ5, ℤ10, ℤ20, ℤ50, and ℤ100. The notes recently underwent an overhaul in order to update the security features, and give them a more modern look. Previously, the ℤ50 was a grey colour, however this was recently changed to turquoise.

The Konia Rakota yu Niđalosia (National Bank of Nithalosia) issues these notes, and is responsible for creation, circulation, and update of the banknotes in Nithalosia. Coins are also their responsibility, however the minting thereof is subcontracted out to an undisclosed business in Seret.

Other currencies

The only other currency accepted anywhere in Nithalosia at present is the Xynderland Crune which is an officially accepted currency in Seret. Businesses in Seret are obliged to accept the Crune when a customer wishes to use it, however change or credit can be given in Zara. Crunes can also be bought in most banks in Seret, and some places in Varta state (particularly in Yamvoth and Krove).

The adoption of the Crune came after large queues in banks in Eqhan caused chaos in the small sea-side town from Xynderlanders wanting to exchange their cash for Nithalosian Zara. The change was very positively received by the wider Seretian community as a step towards better relations with their neighbour.

Transport

The infrastructure in Nithalosia relies heavily on a network of electrified train networks. The Teksašenta Kak yu Niđalosia (Railway Department of Nithalosia, or TKN) is the state-owned sole provider of train services for both industry and commuter purposes in Nithalosia, and TKN is 100% owned by the Nithalosian government. Trains in Nithalosia account for around 92% of freight transport, 65% of intracity commutes, and 74% of intercity travel on mainland Nithalosia. Due to geographical constraints, the figures are significantly lower on Seret. TKN's headquarters and largest railyard are in Yamvoth, Varta State.

Nithalosia also has network of roads connecting each major settlement, however these are relatively small and low-volume given the population of Nithalosia. The only significant highway runs from Nithash city, to the port city of Krove, Varta State. The highest use roads are between towns and villages not serviced by TKN, and towns which have access to the rail network. Gatae Kak yu Niđalosia (Roading Department of Nithalosia, or GKN) is responsible for the management and upkeep of national roads. Smaller roads are the responsibility of the state or county governments.

The Nithalosian government also have a 100% stake in the national air-carrier Avike which flies to all major cities in Nithalosia with an airport, and to many other destinations worldwide. Avike's primary hub is in Nithash City, and its secondary seasonal hub in Yamvoth City.

The fact that Seret is an island provides an infrastructural obstacle. For many years the only form of transport to the island was by way of ferries that left from terminals in Krove and Yamvoth. However, the construction of the Zagna Tunnel between Thaive, Seret, and Cape Eru, Varta State has dramatically increased accessibility of the island to the mainland.

Additionally, the construction of the recently completed Netherstream Bridge between Eqhan, Seret, and Kai, Exgot (Xynderland) gives Seret, and also mainland Nithalosia direct vehicle access to international neighbours.

Ethnic make up of Nithalosia

Nithalosia shares its land borders and sea borders with a handful of nations meaning that parts of Nithalosia are quite ethnically diverse. The above map shows the ethnic majority of each county after Nithalosians. The ethnicities are based on those that the residents identify as. Note that many residents identify with more than one, but this map reflects on their primary identity.

Urbanisation

Language

There are a number of languages spoken in Nithalosia with varying statuses.

Official and Recognised

The official language of Nithalosia which is used in all national and state level judiciary actions, parliament, education, etc is Nithalos. Seretian is also a recognised regional official language; being an official language of Seret alongside Nithalos.

Minority Languages

File:Nithalosia dialect map.png
Dialect map of Nithalosia

The three largest minority languages (in order) are Laefêvëši, Xynder, and Nezen. This is largely due to the immigration from nearby Xynderland and Laefevia. The majority of the Xynder speaking population live in Seret due to the proximity to the border with Xynderland. The majority of Laefêvëši speakers live in ... due to .... Nezen is a cousin language of Nithalosia spoken in a small pocket between the western outskirts of Da Kavai City and Nithalosia's border with ...

Dialects

There are four major dialects of Nithalos spoken in Nithalosia. These are effectively known as: Govthan Nithalos, Nithash Nithalos (standard), Seretian Nithalos, and Xynden Nithalos. Govthan Nithalos is spoken largely in Koyan and Govtha states, with some speakers on the other side of the Ushkeem ranges. Nithash Nithalos (which is what standard Nithalos is based off) is spoke in Nithash, and most of inland Varta state. Seretian Nithalos is largely spoken in rural Seret, and the coastal areas of Varta. And finally, Xynden is spoken largely in the east of Seret and the Midis county in Varta State. The map to the right illustrates the primary dialect spoken by people in each of the counties. Orange for Nithash, Green for Govtha, Blue for Seretian, and Red for Xyndan.
