Rashtun (Rasha: Raştun Raştun [ˈrɑʂtõ]), officially the Principality of Rashtun (Rasha: Şämişdardan Raştun Şämişdardan Raştun [ʂəˈmiʐərðɑ̃ ˈrɑʂtõ]), is an autonomous principality within Gushlia, occupying the northwest of the country. It is bordered to the north by Komania, to the east by Oǧaran Region, to the south by Atankäb Region, Saşkama Region, and Môtoşik Region, and to the west by Zinsha-Vogia. In addition to Rashtun proper, Rashtun exercises a condominium over Saşkama Region along with the Gushli crown.
Etymology
According to Kothlen Horde-era records, the region now known as Rashtun was known as Balâhþon ("gold of the saddle"), from which the modern name ultimately derives. "Saddle" in this context has been determined to refer to Balâhak (whose title means "king of the saddle"), although the meaning of "gold" is disputed. The two most common theories surrounding the meaning of this posit that it is a metaphor referring to either the region's status as the spoils of one of Balâhak's conquests or the area's natural beauty. The name was later attested in Early Middle Rasha as Braşton, which was loaned into Middle Koman and reanalysed as Rashadan. It is from this Koman rendering of the name that the modern term for the Rasha people was back-derived. Post-Great Horde records give the name of the Khanate of Rashtun as Raşton or Raştun, with variable spelling until the latter was chosen as the standard spelling in [year].
