Cardinal: suyõ (pl.) |
Etymology
From Atruozan vüzë ("ten") + yõ ("one") + -bëj ("-CNS"). This, effectively "ten's one", was an older and now-antiquated method of producing "eleven" using an obsolete method for producing numbers additively. Ultimately, it appears to originate from a non-standard contraction of the two where the second syllable of vüzë was preserved rather than the first. This underwent vowel harmonisation and then both spontaneous initial fricative devoicing, observed in a small number of other roots, as well as spontaneous raising of /ɵ̞/ to /u/, perhaps under the influence of /j/ or /õ/.

Usage notes
Used adjectivally, where numerals behave as adjectives and are the closest to the noun of any present, the noun must be plural for it to express the cardinal meaning. Else, it represents the ordinal numeral eleventh".
