Soral (Soral: cuyąhoy nuy [IPA]), officially the Something of Country, is a country located in the north of Atsiq, adjacent to Thargoqotsia and Siqinni.

Etymology

The name Soral derives from the Soral term cuyąhoy aral, meaning "northern language" and originally only referring to the language. However, over time, the term grew to denote any characteristic of the country or its people.

History

Soral has its origins in the Osveraali Empire, originally being a penal colony for the human slaves of the empire. After, and during, Soral gaining its independence, it has been split along political and ethnic divisions, which are still tense today. As the country moves into the modern age, both Dalars and humans are trying to mend the gap.

Pre-imperial period

Before the Osveraali Empire began, the land that today is Soral was populated by the Soralic tribes, who lived a largely hunter-gatherer lifestyle. They spread out across the north of Atsiq, speaking various dialects of Old Soralic.

Imperial period

During the time of the Osveraali Empire, the west of the country stayed largely out of imperial control, largely due to disinterest and the difficulty of dealing with the unorganised tribes. The west contained many penal colonies for both humans and prisoners of war. The Soral language suffered a period of decline in use during the imperial period due to the influence of Imperial Osveraali, especially the dialects of Osveraalic spoken in Jaege.

Late imperial period

As the Empire's influence waned, the human population of Soral began fighting to gain the same rights as dalar. Although they historically were seen as less than sentient, their large numbers helped to advance their cause. The push was largely unsuccessful until the movement to rediscover older tribal traditions, especially the Soral language. Mixed dalar-humans became the figurehead of the human rights movement, being seen as a symbol of the old Soralic tribes.
