Tarelk (Taara pronunciation: /täɾɛlk/) is a martial art developed in the Bavkir Empire. It developed from the indigenous Bavkïr martial arts codified during the reign of Ṡromïk Alaar, in an attempt to improve the cultural integrity and military capability of his army. Generally, Tarelk incorporates a wide array of martial techniques such as striking, grappling, throws, joint locks and weapon training. In more traditional schools, culturally important skills such as sailing, dancing, hunting and gardening are taught, where more contemporary schools focus on tournament competition, and incorporate techniques from other disciplines. Originally, Tarelk was used by Kihiþkudïjid to secure succession in times of hereditary uncertainty.

History

Succession in Bavkïr tradition is carried out based on the size of the clan first, the father's clan second, and when there is an uncertainty in succession, two are chosen among the clans to serve as the representatives of their entire clan. They would battle to the first blood during the marriage ceremony, with the families watching, and the first to draw blood would determine the clan of the family's children. Originally chosen by casting lots, the tradition eventually evolved such that each clan had a pool of champions, called "Kihiþkudïjid" (Lit. Clan fighters) who would carry out the ritual battle during the wedding ceremony. The art of Tarelk began during the Heresy Wars as a series of informal instruction that an elder Kihiþkudïj, who had fought many battles, would pass on to the younger Kihiþkudïjid.

During the First Bavkïr Empire, the Anax and Çaraj dynasties drafted their soldiers from the Kihiþkudïjid of their clans, but this would lead to a shortage of champions in times of military disaster. It was not until the Alaar dynasty when most of the smaller clans had been drained of their champions after a military disaster after the Żinǡ War of 1667 had ended, that Tarelk was codified. Ṡromïk needed to recruit soldiers, as there was a lack of available manpower for the next military campaign, as a majority of the clans' champions had been killed in the previous war. To train new soldiers, he gathered up the eldest surviving Kihiþkudïjid and asked them to create a standard training program for recruits and overhauling the draft system to broaden the recruitment requirements so that he would have the capability to raise a new army.

During the dissolution of the empire, and during the colonial period of Eastern Boroso, the art was changed to allow the entire populace access to the training. After the end of the Bavkir Civil War the art was encouraged to promote a cultural and national identity and assert its independence among the international community. It remains today the most popular sport of Bavkïrak
