Tuguç (Language: Country [IPA]), officially the Pirate Republic of Tuguç, was a country located in the Eastern Isles region of the Taanttu sea.

Etymology

Though the nation was named after the Bavkir clan which had first colonized the island of Tuguç, the original meaning of the clan name has been lost to time.

History

The island of Tuguç was first colonized by the Tuguç clan in the year 731 BCE. Since then, however, the Tuguç clan dissolved and their daughter-clans fought each other for control of the island with no one clan managing to hold the entire island for more than a lifetime, until the Bavkir eastern islands were united under the banner of Sarax Haya and his Hayan clan in the year 230 AD to contest the encroaching power of the Kuuvluṡk confederation from the west.

Tuguç came under control of the Bavkir Empire during the reign of Kumruud "The Possessed" Anax in the year 1267 during his eastern campaign.

During the second imperial period, Maṡma became the most important staging ground for the Bavkir navy, as it was a central location between their main holdings in modern day Bavkirak and Zhinayak as well as its secondary holdings all across the Taanttu sea. The infrastructure to construct and maintain the Bavkir empire's navy began to concentrate on the island starting from the mid 16th century and would provide the Pirate republic with the means to maintain its own fleet.

With the decline of the Bavkir empire, sanctioned privateers, career pirates, and former navy soldiers-built fortresses in the region and were allowed increasing autonomy by the government, as it had become the furthest region under the empire's control in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This laid the foundation for the pirate republic which was operating independently from the empire as early at 1687, but was not officially established until the year 1701, when the various pirate fleets assembled at Maṡma to sign the Kuṡlu Accord which founded the Pirate Republic of Tuguç.

Similar to Bavkir clan and tribal divisions, each pirate fleet occupied a specific port city around the islands of Tuguç, Naamen, Tuurjwi and Anajwi. Each fleet would then swear fealty to another pirate lord based on respect and relative power, though allowed to retain a level of autonomy, up to the Head Pirate, which would have dominion over all of the islands in the republic

Military

The nation's military was comprised of old marauders and navymen from the old empire, as well as captured ships from neighboring nations.

Economy

A large fraction of the nations' wealth was made from the sacking of coastal cities around the Taanttu sea, stealing cargo from passing Terminian, Letzian, and Vosan ships, and from being a legal safehaven for many illicit activities, such as gambling prostitution and slavery.

The islands' planatations provided foodstuffs that were used to feed the population and were sold abroad in trade.
