Bire-bire fly
The bire-bire fly is a kind of fly native to the area of Kawa mountains in the Confederation of Ebo Nganagam, they can also be found elsewhere in the Confederation of Ebo Nganagam and other places of North Baredina.
Despite being called a fly, genetically, they are actually more similar to mosquitoes than true flies. Bire-bire flies mostly feed on plant material, but will also drink mammalian blood.
Bire-bire flies are one of the numerous and common animals in the area of Kawa mountains, ethnic Ebo Nganagam people sometimes collect bire-bire flies and larvae, making them into edible patties, a main source of protein for some people, and a common street food.
Bire-bire flies are generally harmless to human beings, but they spread the bire-bire fever, a kind of livestock disease that can be lethal to a variety of ungulate species, especially bovines. Most mammals, including humans, can carry the fever with no symptoms, although it has occasionally had severe health effects on young, elderly, or immunocompromised people. It cannot be easily transferred between mammals, although there are reports of it transmitting via blood transfusion. The bire-bire fever is caused by a parasitic, single-celled eukaryote from the Wikipedia:Plasmodium group, making it distantly ralted to malaria.
There is no vaccination for bire-bire fever. Treatment is supportive. DDT is effective in repelling bire-bire flies.
