Calutian, known natively as Djan Khəruŝə (/djan kʰəɾuʃə/) is the most spoken and official language of the Empire of Calutia. It is a member of the broad Hedretic language family, with languages like Kalman, Thumish, Setreddian, Andivian, and Hotcreizeng in it. Spoken in the central parts of Calutia, in the plateau between the Cakar River and the Krattio River by around 1 and a half million people, this is by far the most known language. This also serves as the lingua franca for all of Calutia, being a popular L2 for anybody in the Northern Tarnteas and southward.

Calutian is in the Hedretic family of languages, spanning from Thumia to Korihim. But Calutian in particular falls within the Central Hedretic branch, in the Calutic sub-branch, sharing its most recent ancestor with Tazjuoa, Middle Calutian, which had died in 1734.

History

The Hedretic languages had been historically spoken in and around the Cakar-Krattio River valley, though some linguists say it had been spoken to as far as A Palrak in modern-day Korihim.

Writing and literature

This language is written in the Calutic Script, which is shared with every Hedretic language, except the Eastern Hedretic languages, and including Vrollaic. The Hedretic Script is alphabetical, so every phonemic sound has a character, except when historical spelling is involved. In historical spelling, /pʼ/ had still been a thing, and that was written with two P glyphs next to each other, but even after /pʼ/ assimilated into plain /p/, it is still spelled as if it were ejective.
