Hangai (officially The Kingdom of Hangai, native name <tbd> [tbd]) is a country in the Asura ocean located north of Litene.

Geography and ethnography

Hangai is an island nation in the Asura ocean and is composed of three big islands (Pwetha, Central and Eastern island) and several atolls. The biggest island is the Pwetha island, where the capital is located. This island is home to five tribes, one of them being Hangaians proper. Stretching from the Pwetha island south is the Koma archipelago, which consists of 6 atolls and is inhabited by the Koma and Deoka people. South of the Koma archipelago, the [name still not made] archipelago is located, with three prominent volcanic islands. The southernmost island in the country, located west of Litene and discovered by random, is inhabited by the closest relatives of the Itong people of Litene.

Religion

Hangai has a mandatory state religion called Hato, which was enforced by the first king (Hangaian: pwápwih [pʷápʷìh]) after his conquest of Pwetha island in 1812.

History

The Kings

The first Hangaian king, coming from the Hangai tribe, united the Pwetha island (the biggest island in Hangai) in 1812 after 10 years of treaties and wars. He wanted to unify Hangai under one religion, the religion of his people, Hato (one of his famous quotes is after all "If you're not Hatoist, you're not Hangaian"), in which he succeeded, as 95% of the population nowadays practices it, with the other 5% being a recent development. The first king of unified Pwetha modeled his kingdom on the neighboring Sunrise Empire, and even today Litenean influence is still felt in the government structure - many offices were imitated and given new names, created by calquing the original Itong words, only sometimes, with others being referred by loanwords from Itongpe to this day.

Hangai-Litene relations

With a smaller economy and lower standard of living, Hangai is often perceived, especially by outsiders, as being in the shadow of Litene, its neighbor. This however doesn't generate much ill will towards Litene, and indeed most Hangaians see Litene as the birthplace of Southern Central Marianic culture and the institution of the kingdom. Many also see it as more traditional and a model to be emulated. Litene and Hangai are also perceived to be one "nation", and even today a council of elders representing both nations meets yearly in two villages perceived to be the oldest (one of which being the birthplace of the first Hangaian king, one in each country, whose status was, however, hotly contested, with many meetings being held in one village, usually the Litenean, to which the Hangaian side begrudgingly agreed until 1950, when the members of the council decided to alternate between the two villages each year.
