Plot
In December of 1987, the main cast are traveling in the morning by bus for a ski trip in the lower Yertmik Mountains. Their guide, Namtot, is giving them an overview of some of the local history of the region while driving them to their destination at the ski lodge along the slope. The characters settle into the lodge, when Namtot gives a forewarning to be careful around the animals, especially at night as people have gotten lost that way. The tourists brush off his warning typical safety protocol, Namtot helps some unnamed tourists off of the bus and bringing their baggage, when the characters after settling in, begin to go about their day. Rive (Este Viḍescês) and Une (Buri Doveses), the main couple, make their way to the slopes when along the way they see a herd of reindeer. Une, intrigued by the sight goes to pet one of the seemingly friendly reindeer when Namtot, from inside the lodge, sees what's happening and yells at her for interacting with the reindeer and ignoring his warnings.
As arguments unfold between the tourists and their guide, the reindeer have seemingly vanished and a dark figure in the background is watching the characters as some of the snow is brought up by the wind. The characters spend some time skiing before the wind picks up Ngul for a moment, causing them to lose balance and sprain their ankle. As Ngul is injured, Namtot mentions that he's going to need to wait until the upcoming storm is over so that they can take him to the hospital. Ngul insists the injury isn't anything to worry about and Namtot provides some temporary alleviation to the pain in his ankle.
While Namtot is helping Ngul inside of one of the lodge rooms; Gain Ho, Er, Vijane, and Ngummukkota are still outside skiing despite the worsening weather. Upon reaching the end of the slope, Gain Ho while undoing the notches on his skis is approached by a reindeer almost face to face. Gain Ho arrogantly spooks the reindeer off, where he is hit by snowfall from the treeline, conveniently where Vijane and Er are chatting. This leads to an encounter between the three that eventually leads to Gain Ho slapping Vijane and getting into a fist fight with Er while Rive shows up in time to break up the fight before Er gets anymore injured after suffering a bloody nose and bruises. Namtot returns to see what has happened and urges everyone back into the lodge, whereupon Gain Ho, Er, and Vijane insist on leaving. Namtot, eventually sick of everyone's behavior and wanting to avoid further disaster for the party, decides to let the group vote on whether to leave or stay. Rive and Une, pressured by Vijane and Er, agree to also leave making the vote five to two. Namtot helps the group load their bags onto the snowtruck (as the bus would be inoperable) as the storm gets progressively worse.
On their travel down the mountain, the storm creates such conditions with visibility that much isn't able to be seen in front of the group. As Namtot drives, the group starts arguing once more which causes Namtot to take his eyes off the road for a second, resulting in the truck slamming into a reindeer. Namtot, being cautious, checks to see what had happened, and realizes what had occurred as he makes eye contact with the Mezzeg in the distance with a herd of deer. Keeping his eye on the creature, he backs into the truck before driving with the group asking what happened and why he seems so pale. Namtot continues to insist it was just a deer with its guts everywhere, but he hides the existence of the Mezzeg to the group as he makes his way to a pit stop along the way to check up on the truck.
As the party walks into the diner portion of the pit stop, Namtot is alone working on fixing the truck with Ngul inside resting his ankle in the front seat of the vehicle. Rive and Une are talking about the incident to one another when the old lady behind the counter overhears what happened and asks them if they had covered the reindeer in snow. When they mention they don't know what Namtot did, she tells the tale of the Mezzeg and how they defend their herds and what happens when someone harms them. Une, Vijane, and Rive grow slightly concerned wondering if what happened on the slope was related to the Mezzeg. Gain Ho however, dismisses it as a bunch of nonsense and as he leaves to go for a cigarette, he notices the door to the garage was left open and investigates. As he approaches the garage door, he is knocked unconscious by what's assumed the Mezzeg.
