Qazania (East Qazan: qazańśasta qazańśasta [qaˈzaŋɕastä]; Kalda: kazanśasta kazanśasta [ˈkäsɐnʂästə]), officially the Qaldic Republic of Qazania and known commonly as Khaazland (kɑːzlænd) is a country located in Upper Boroso, south of Mwamba-Sangmia. With a population of around 43.6 million, Qazania remains as one of the smaller countries in Upper Boroso in terms of population. Qazania is ruled by a theocratic government with Qaldaism as its state religion.

Etymology

There are several theories to where the demonym Qazań came from. The most widely accepted theory believes that Qazań comes from the verb qadyy, meaning "to bless", which is a loan from Old South Bavkiri *kad(w). Another possible root would be from the verb qazdyy, meaning "to begin". There have also been speculations that Qazań could be traced back to qajar, meaning spear, which is loaned from Old South-Bavkiri kajar. Other theories include coming from qar meaning "great" and qaryz meaning "millet".

History

Pre-Bavkiri Era

The Khaaz people were traditionally farmers who grew amaranth, millet and sometimes corn around the area. Khaazland was split into the east, central and the west, with the east more known for their trading with surrounding communities and the west and central more known for farming. Kaazism is an ancient polytheistic religion that was the traditional and main religion for most of Khaazland.

East Khaazland

East Khaazland was ruled by the Yeret family, and followed a hierarchy system of King > Clergy (of Kaazism)> Soldiers and Merchants > Peasants. Devotionism started to spread in the area through cultural diffusion, coastal trading and coastal invasions and conquests from around 500-600AD. Kaazism and Devotionism coexisted initially in harmony, although Kaazism had always been advantageous in politics. Overtime, tensions between Kaazism and Devotionism grew as Devotionist merchants grew increasingly rich, arising to the status of Kaazist clergymen. This threatened the balance of the social hierarchy in East Khaazland, and subsequently the Kaazists tried to impose taxes on Devotionist merchants, and eventually on all Devotionists as they began to view the religion as a threat due to its ever increasing popularity. By 900AD Devotionism has become the major religion of East Khaazland, and tensions continued to grow, with occasional fighting between the two religions throughout 1000-1400 AD. In July 1382, King Keber converted to Devotionism and declared Devotionism the official religion of East Khaazland, and reformed the hierarchy, promoting Devotionist clergymen. Most of the population liked the King’s decision, but around 35% of the populations, mostly farmers and clergymen were unhappy, and would like Kaazism to be restored as the official religion. Many of the advisors of the King turned against him and eventually the King was forced to abdicate in August, 1382 by the advisors, and a new monarch was installed - King Gadur II. King Gadur II immediately reinstalled Kaazism as the official religion and reverted the hierarchy to the traditional hierarchy of East Khaazland. Religious freedom was suppressed to ensure the position of Kaazism as the official religion as King Gadur II discouraged the practise of Devotionism, and demanded more additional taxes to be imposed onto Devotionists. A radical Devotionist, named Kugar Abalman called for a revolution to create a new monarchy with a Devotionist monarch instead of a Kaazist monarch. Dissatisfaction grew in the population as the tax is imposed on food, land, clothing and more for Devotionists and the government started collecting more produce from Devotionists than before, collecting up to 97% of their total harvest. Beyond the taxation of harvests from Devotionists, a series of irregular monsoon seasons and climate changes happened throughout the late 14th century and caused famine throughout east Khaazland. King Gabur II was completely unaware of the starving population in East Khaazland. The starving caused some peasants to start revolting against their landlords throughout the period. Trade was at its all time low, the country was out of food and revolts were common over the country, and the King was ignorant. Revolts grew larger within the country, devastating the economy of the country further as peasants stop working for their landlord and both peasants and landlords were being killed. Although a full scale revolution was never reached, the country was completely devastated over the winter, with the infrastructure fully shattered, and could not recover to its original state. The expanding Qaldic Empire saw the opportunity to invade and attacked East Khaazland, winning most of the country’s territory by January 1384, and around the same time Bavkir clans and tribes were united and the Bavkir Empire was formed, and the empire launched a large scale attack along the coast of East Khaazland. The attack was very successful and the Bavkir Empire gained control of the coast, meanwhile West Khaazland expanded further inward. In March of 1393, East Khaazland perished, and was split between the Qaldic Empire and the Bavkir Empire.

Central Khaazland

Central Khaazland was ruled by the Gunsu family. The Gunsu family's lineage traces back to the Uttum family of West Khaazland, and thus Central Khaazland had always been a close ally to West Khaazland. Central Khaazland was an agricultural society and frequently traded with East Khaazland for other goods that ultimately came from trades with Bavkiri merchants. In 1222 Prince Hardom Aratta Gunsu of Central Khaazland and Princess Belim Sengiz Yeret of East Khaazland married each other, further improving the relationship between Central Khaazland and East Khaazland. Central Khaazland organised the lands into long strips that are assigned to individual lords, and this could still be seen in the divisions of counties in the historic region of Central Khaazland in present day Qazania. Due to the improved relation between the countries after Prince Hardom and Princess Belim's marriage, East Khaazland nobles often moved into Central Khaazland and were given land by the Gunsu family. These nobles who had extensive interactions with Bavkir traders brought along with them fishing and navigation technology but most importantly Devotionism. Devotionism was imposed as an official religion by some of these nobles in certain parts of Central Khaazland. Devotionism spread quickly throughout Central Khaazland and around 1290 the Gunsu family had converted to Devotionism. Central Khaazland's decentralised government eventually led to corruption, and its crippling economy and and starvation eventually led to its collapse. Following King Sardak Rappat Gunsu's death in 1321, 4 year-old Prince Garobul Sardak Gunsu was forced to step up as king, but due to his immaturity nobles sought this as an opportunity to fight for more political power. This led to the 8 year long Telbir rebellion which devasted the country, and the country collapsed in 1332 due to an invasion from the Qaldic Empire.

West Khaazland

West Khaazland was ruled by the Uttum family and had been historically allies with Central Khaazland. At the turn of the 13th century however the kingdom was split into the Uruz kingdom (present-day Uruzu and Mwamban Autonomous Region), the Kark kingdom (present-day Karku), the Dom kingdom (present-day Domu) and the Sebik kingdom (present-day Karuzu and Sebiku). Between these countries, the Uruz and Kark kingdoms both had political ties with the Sebik kingdom as both royal families within the Uruz and the Kark are married with members of the royal families in Sebik. In 1279 a revolution occurred in the Dom kingdom led by Atqar Qarwy Qaldaý and the kingdom was overthrown, establishing the Qaldic Empire. Within around 2 decades, the remaining kingdoms of West Khaazland were annexed by the Qaldic Empire. Furthermore, present-day Qavśa and Mihinśe were also annexed in a matter of few years.

Qaldic Era

Bavkirs in the East

Many Bavkir clans were stretched across the coastal regions of Qazania during the 13th century. As of the late 13th century, the clans were united and the First Bavkir Empire was formed. Under the reign of Tuur. Masïċ I and Kumruud, the empire quickly took control of the north-eastern regions of modern Qazania (which would correspond to the the Autonomous Region of the Shalfs and the Port of Jigüśe) and was partly responsible for the fall of East Khaazland. This Bavkir territory continued to be Bavkir with occasional changes during the early to middle Qaldic era, all the way into right before the beginning of the Colonial Era. Within this time period, the First Bavkir Empire was reformed into the Second Bavkir Empire. In the late 17th century, as the Empire weakens, the Qaldic Empire was able to conquer most of the Bavkir territory in present-day Qazania. After the collapse of the Second Bavkir Empire, the remaining Bavkir clans in the east coast of present-day Qazania formed the Shalf Union, and a peace treaty was drawn between the Qaldic Empire and the Shalf Union. The border between the Qaldic Empire and the Bavkir territory remained the same until the fall of the Qaldic Empire and the colonisation of both the Bavkir territory and the former Qaldic territory.

Qaldic Rule

The Qaldic Empire was first conceived by Atqar Qarwy Qaldaý and his followers in 1268 and officially established in 1279 following the revolution in the Dom kingdom. All of Western Khaazland was united under the Qaldic Empire in 1308 and present day Qavća was conquered in 1315 following the First Qaldic Conquest. After the Second Qaldic Conquest, Central Khaazland fell into Qaldic rule in 1332 and the Eastern kingdom fell within the rule of the Qaldic Empire by March of 1393 following the Third Qaldic Conquest.
Under the rule of the Qaldic Empire, Arsatyń was established as the capital of the Qaldic Empire, but Jalsatyń remained as the capital of literature and education and thus the Jalsatyń dialect of Qazan was promoted as the official language of the country. During this time period, Qaldaism spread throughout the country as the state religion.
Until 1408, the practice other religions were still allowed in the Qaldic Empire but was taxed by the government. In the same year, Jalsatyń gained an official status as a holy city and soon after replaced Arsatyń as the capital in 1415. All religions aside from Qaldaism were banned from 1415 and alcohol was also banned. The old hierarchial system was abolished and the new de jure caste system was established based on occupation, ethnicity, religion and more. The Qaldic Golden Age of Literature lasted from the early 15th century to the late 17th century, and following the Final Qaldic Conquest from 1672 to 1693, some Bavkir territory was conquered by the Qaldic empire.

Shalfs

Shalfs are the largest minority group in Qazania, making up around roughly 7% of the country's population. The Shalfs are descendants of Bavkir settlers in the north-eastern coast of Qazania. The minority has a designated autonomous region and Jigüśe is their largest port and city. Shalfs are known for their seafood and sea navigation and is the main proponent of Devotionism in Qazania since the arrival of Bavkir clans in Qazania around 500-600 AD. Through the language of their ancestors, numerous loanwords of Bavkir origin have entered the Qazan language. The Shalfs speak their native tongue Shalfara and are mostly Devotionist.

Language

The official language and most widely spoken language of Qazania is Qazan. There are two main varieties of Qazan - East Qazan and Kalda Qazan. East Qazan is the preferred variety for institution mostly in central-east Qazania, whereas Kalda is preferred instead in west Qazania. Overall, East Qazan is more widely spoken than Kalda. Beyond Qazan, Shalf, a distant relative to Taara and Modern Standard Mwamban, is the second most popular language, spoken in the Shalf Autonomous Region and the Port of Jigüśe by the Shalf.

Religion

Qazania's major religion is Qaldaism, a monotheistic religion with Devotionist origins that preaches the teaching of the prophet Atqar Qarwy Qaldaý. The religion is considered the official religion in Qazania and it is mandatory by law to take belief in the religion outside of the autonomous regions. Minor religions in Qazania include Devotionism and Kaazism, the traditional polytheistic religion that predates Qaldaism which only continues to thrive in the Mihin Autonomous Region. Qaldaism is also the state religion in the Qaldic Kav Autonomous Region although it is not law enforced unlike in other parts of Qazania.

Culture

Heritage

Architecture

Traditional Qazan architecture - known as old architecture, focuses on religious themes in Qaldaism. White is a symbol of purity and gold is a symbol of holiness and prosperity and as such major buildings in Qazania, especially those in Jalsatyń, the country's capital, are constructed with a white body and a golden dome. Religious symbols are also heavily present in Qazan buildings. New architecture in Qazania is modernised and industrialised, similar to other countries, new architecture consists of using metal, concrete and glass as main materials as the exterior for buildings.

Literature

Historically, the literature of Qazania were divided into two eras - the pre-colonisation era and the colonisation and post-colonisation era. In these eras, there exists a drastic shift in the style of writing, as well as the focus of literature and its ideas.

Pre-colonisation Literature

Pre-colonisation literature mostly emerged from liturgical traditions and psalms revolving around the worship of Jet and to some extent, the experiences of Atqar Qarwy Qaldaý. Literature from this period is very structurally rigid.

Colonisation and Post-colonisation Literature

Whereas Qazania's literature is mostly only written in the Qazan language, literature from the colonisation and post-colonisation era is written in a variety of languages, ranging from Qazan to Shalf to Mihin. Nevertheless, most literature from this period of time emphasise on survivalism and the persistence of culture against adversity. In this period, literature is also less structured.

Modern literature

A notable trend in modern literature of Qazania is the return to the pre-colonisation themes of Jet's holiness and Jet's worship, as well as revisiting folk stories and oral traditions and using them as inspiration for literature. The struggle of survival and the persistence of Qazan is becoming less prevalent in modern literature of Qazania. Rather, some modern literature of Qazania reference many different countries and cultures and emphasise on the diversity of experience. In general, modern literature of Qazania is divided between folk traditions and religion versus experiences outside of Qazania and its people.
