From CWS Planet

This template is used to configure the articles found in the Selected person or Selected location section found on most Wikipedia Portal main pages. Use it on the article pages that are linked to the Selected place sub-page, e.g. Portal:Foo/Selected place/1. For the quickest and easiest way to create the Portal:Foo/Selected bar sub-page and related article links, use the {{Numbered subpages}} template.

Template layout

{{Selected location
| image   =
| size    =
| side    =
| caption =
| name    =
| founded =
| coord   =
| text    =  <!--- Required --->
| link    =  <!--- Required --->
| archive =
}}

Usage

It is unnecessary to include braces, quotation marks or other wiki-markup in the template. The |text= field does allow the use of wiki-markup at the contributor's discretion.

  • image - Places an image relating to the subject of the article on the left side of the section.
  • size - Sets the image size, if left out or left blank it will default to 250px.
  • side - Sets the location of the image, it will default to left. The other allowable values are center and right
  • caption- Creates a caption for the image.
  • name - Adds the name of the person at the top left corner of the article, automatically bolded
  • founded- Adds the location's founding date, format is at contributor's discretion. Requires the name field.
  • coord - Adds the place's geographic co-ordinates, use the {{coord}} template to format.
  • text - A brief summary of the subject.
  • link - Sets the link in the Read more... that points to the full article.
  • archive - Using this field with a value of no will remove the More selected locations... link in the lower left corner. Use this field if you are using the |footer= parameter in the {{random box-header subpage}} template on the main portal page.

Examples

Long form

The long form of this template places the place's name immediately to the left of the picture and gives you the option of adding founding dates and geographic co-ordinates. If the |name= field is not included, the template will not include the |founded= field.

{{Selected location
| image   = FraminghamMATownHall 2007-03-25.jpg
| size    =
| caption = The memorial Building, Framingham's town hall.
| name    = Framingham, Massachusetts
| founded = 1650
| coord   = {{coord|42.299795|-71.426627}}
| text = '''Framingham''' is a town in [[Middlesex County, Massachusetts|Middlesex County]]...
| link    = Framingham, Massachusetts
}}

Will yield this:

Framingham, Massachusetts

Framingham is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2000 census, the population was 66,910, making it the most populous town in New England. There have been several proposals to change the town's charter to make Framingham a city, but none have succeeded.

Because the |name= field formats the subject's name so that it is in bold text, it is suggested that you do not put the subjects name in bold in the text of the article.
