On 14 April 1996, the National Armed Forces of Temay, led by General Soy Jeun-Nhao, launched a coup d’état against the democratically-elected Kúúlist government led by President Dha San-Lhas, following three months of protests. The military established a junta, led by Soy, that suppressed political activities in Temay as well as conducting mass-arrests against prominent Kúúlist politicians, including Dha.
After dissolving the government and the legislature, the military council vested executive and legislative powers in Soy. Martial law and curfew were declared across the nation. Protests in favour of Dha were violently suppressed throughout the country; mass arrests and extrajudicial killings were reported.
