Etymology: ioi (hundred) + žeri (eye) |
Iožria (pronunciation: /ˈjoʒrja/) is the capital and largest city in the island nation of Niofe.
Etymology
The name Iožria is a compound of ioi ("hundred") and žeri ("eye"), thus having a meaning similar to "city of a hundred eyes". This etymology is thought to derive from the Dlinistic Gennist belief that the Niofean Gennist prophet, Ažan s Iožria, was born and lived there and during his life he could speak directly to Dlin, the Gennist spirit, who materialised to him in the form of hundreds of eyes.
Before and during the time that Ažan s Iožria was said to have lived in Iožria, it was still under its previous name: Škiofe, a compound of 'small' and 'sand', referring to the natural landscapes still prevalent in the town at the time before the mass urbanisation seen throughout the 19th century.
History
Iožria was first settled by an early Xhovian culture in the 3rd century, speaking a language descended from Proto-Xhorial.
Iožria took on its current name and became the capital city of Niofe in 1646 after the Niofean Civil War and the first rudimentary parliament was set up in a manor in Iožria that had previously belonged to the monarchy.
