The Republic of Arkihan (Arkihanakh: þaldiṫu alkiḳannax Ŧarditsu arKikxanax [θɐː.dɪ.tsʊ ɐː.kɪ.kxɐ.nɐx]), or simply Arkihan (alkiḳann arKikxan [ɐː.kɪ.kxɐn]) is the third most populous constituent nation of the Povan Confederation. Arkihan is bordered by Tabiqa to the west, Arzahu to the north, Ailmudenje to the east and Säromos and Jymseje to the south. Arkihan is home to the Arkihanakh peoples, a group that comes under the umbrella term 'Povan' and has its roots in the ancient Adzamic Empire, when many Adzamic peoples migrated to the region and displaced the native population. The population of Arkihan quickly developed a separate identity from their Adzamic relatives and, throughout the warlord periods the Povania region went through, they maintained that identity. With the Neviran and Saruan Empires came a great deal of Neviran influence, and through extensive contact with other Povan peoples such as the people of Jymseje, a single Povan identity was born.
Today, the Republic of Arkihan is a democratic republic with a high quality of life. Through the Povan Confederation, Arkihan has made a notable impact abroad, with many Arkihanakh companies having gone global in recent years. A significant number of Povan presidents have been from Arkihan, and have influenced regional politics.
Etymology
The name "Arkihan" comes from Arkihanakh arKikxan, which can mean either "Arkihan" or "the people of Arkihan" depending on the context. The generally accepted belief is that arKikxan derived from an Old Adzamic word meaning something along the lines of "the green riverbank". Due to their origins in the desert, the ancestors of the Arkihanakh likely considered the green land of Arkihan to be a giant riverbank.
