Culture

Body Modification

Pearcing and stretching the earlobes and the lower lip is common amog the Aseshan people and all the relted ethnics groups. Both women and men have body modification although they differs in the type of jowel it is pierced. Most of matierial that have been used for stretch and pierce are bone's animal. Nowadays, with new tools, practices have changed, and only metal and less and less showy jewels are used. Only the oldest in rural areas still use traditional jewelry.

The numbers of ornaments and jewel on the bpdy does not differ between th genders, although women are pierced more on ear, while men tend to stretch more the earlobe and ahve bigger pierce in the lowerlip.

Both genders expirience genital mutilation which is practiced during the Tufali, the coming-of-age ritual.

Genital Modification

Traditionally, the Aseshan conduct elaborate rite of passage rituals which include surgical genital modification in order to initiate children into adulthood. This ritual is applied to both males and females. This ritual is typically performed by the elders, who use a sharpened knife and makeshift cattle hide bandages for the procedure.

The male ceremony refers to the excision of the prepuce (foreskin). During the ceremony it is plaied ritual songs which talk about how this pain would make him braver, stronger and more masculine. However during the practice the boy is tighten up to avoid sudden movements that could cause the elder to make a mistake in the delicate and tedious process; which can result in severe lifelong scarring, dysfunction, and pain.

The female cerimony also undergo excision ("female circumcision", "female genital mutilation") as part of an elaborate rite of passage. The ritual is similar to the male one but the legs are lifted ans spreaded with the help of the femle elders of the village.
