Design Banner comprised of a 9-by-9 square patchwork in four colours arranged diagonally

The national flag of Kasiiralq is a 9 × 9 square patchwork comprised of four colours - blue, black, red and white - arranged in a diagonal pattern.

History

When Kasiiralq was initially founded as a confederation in [year] the collected treaties did not specify the use of a flag. Even upon the formal consolidation of the alliance and adoption of the constitution of Kasiiralq, no provision for a national symbol was included. It was only X years later that, upon realising the need for a banner to represent the country on an international platform, that a convention was held in order to determine the nature of the flag. The convention was reportedly tense, as the representatives wanted to avoid any symbolism that would favour one of the major ethnic groups over another. Differences in opinion were sharp, with some who favoured a foreign-style flag in the style of Balakia or Terminia, some who favoured an indigenous design and some who rejected the concept of a flag entirely as an unnecessary foreign imposition. Eventually after several weeks a design based on a square patchwork (a design common to all major cultural groups in the country) was chosen, with four colours symbolically chosen to represent the four major ethnic groups in the nation.

Description

Design and dimensions

The official flag law of Kasiiralq defines the flag as

"a flag of equal height and width, consisting of nine squares by nine for a total of eighty one squares. Each square is equal in height and width, and is coloured one of four colours: blue, black, red and white. Each corner is to be shaded blue, and from left to right the colours will then alternate in the following pattern: black, followed by red, followed by white, followed by blue, and so forth. From top to bottom the colours will progress: white, followed by red, followed by black, followed by blue, and so forth. This arrangement leaves a diagonal line of each colour that progresses from top left to bottom right."

Colour and symbolism

There are several meanings attributed to each colour on the Kasiiralq flag: representation of one of the four major ethno-cultural groups, acknowledgement of the natural world, and for each of the cardinal directions.
