Awarahl, sometimes erroneously known as Arawahl, officially the Federated Islands of Awarahl, is an island nation in Soltenna. Located in the Dragon Sea, it lies off the western coast of the Soltennan mainland and shares a maritime border with Qonklaks in the east, Kema Mi Amo in the north and Pulehono in the west.
Etymology
The name Awarahl derives from Middle Terminian and means "Island of Dragons".
History
Ngerupic people first settled the islands of Awarahl in ??????.
Southern parts of Awarahl formed part of the Terminian Empire's expansive trade empire in the 15th century. Following the Terminian departure, Awarahl was controlled by the Qonklese Empire. It was ceded to Olboros Terminia in 1773 along with Macyeaq following the ??? war. Under Terminian Rule, the Terminian language was introduced as a lingua franca for the multilingual population of the island. It was exploited for its resources of ?? and ??, and ????.
Awarahl unilaterally declared independence from Olboros Terminia in 1872, a decision which Terminia recognised in 1887. For many years it was governed by the Terminian minority population who enforced Terminian as the lingua franca and sole language of governance. However, in 1917, the governing social-liberals amended the constitution to allow non-Terminians to partake in the democratic process for the first time. The first Ngerupic president of Awarahl, Name Nameson, was elected in a landslide in 1919.
In 1936, the nascent Qonklese Empire conquered Awarahl on irredentist grounds, commencing a period of Qonklese Occupation. The elected government continued to operate as a government-in-exile, based in Magali, and upon the entrance of Qonklaks into the Great Ekuosian War pledged support for the Allied side. Following the Helsonian occupation of Qonklaks, the government-in-exile was permitted to reestablish sovereignty over the islands in 1953. However, under pressure from the Helsonian Union and Kúúlist Qonklaks, the Kúúlist Party of Awarahl won the 1958 elections and began just over 5 decades of uninterrupted rule. Unlike most Kúúlist nations, no new constitution was written for the Kúúlist period and Awarahl remained de jure a multiparty democracy. However, the Kúúlist party consistently won as much as 98 percent of the vote, largely due to widespread corruption, voter intimidation and other fraudulent election malpractices. The Kúúlist party enacted a series of reforms to shift Awarahl away from a market economy, and ???.
