Kaiyyo (IPA: /kaij:o/, Yawó: Gayegy, IPA: /ᵑgɐ˧jeɰ˧/, Jayun Thap: Kaiyo /kɐijɵ/), officially the Republic of Kaiyyo, is a country on southern Lahan. It borders Tuyo to the west and Teru to the north. Kaiyyo is the second most populous country on Lahan, after Tuyo, with a population of over 34 million inhabitants. It occupies a total land area of 779,002 km2 (300,774 sq mi), and its capital and largest city is NAME.

Kaiyyo was inhabited by a large number of indigenous groups before the arrival of Neviran colonisers in the 17th century, when, alongisde much of Lahan, it became a territory of the Saruan Empire. Kaiyyo remained under Neviran rule until 1870, when it was purchased by the Balak Empire and consolidated into South Herayan alongside modern-day Tuyo. By 1924, organized resistance by civilians, especially those of Neviran stock, saw the region gain a semi-independent status as a protectorate of the empire. It gained full independence through force after the Great Kaiyyoan rebellion in YEAR.

Despite remaining under colonial control for over two hundred years, large areas of Kaiyyo's interior remain largely inaccessible to this day.

History

Pre-Neviran period

Archaeological and genetic evidence suggests that humans first inhabited Kaiyyo around 36,000 to 39,000 years ago. These humans were descendants of the first waves of human migration out of Puzimm. These first inhabitants were likely nomadic hunter-gatherer groups, however little is known of the cultural or linguistic identity as they were replaced by later migrations.

Around 4,500 BCE, Lahiri-speaking pastoralists migrated across the Sañu Strait from Puzimm.

Neviran arrival

The first recorded landfall of Neviran sailors on the land that would later become Kaiyyo occurred in 1668, near the beginning of the Saruan empire's colonisation of Lahan. This first landfall occurred at the mouth of the NAME river, where the first Neviran colony in Kaiyyo was established and the flag raised at ""NAME"" bay ((now the site of the capital)).

The indigenous population declined for more than 200 years following the establishment of the first colonies in Kaiyyo, at first primarily due to infectious disease and later in frontier conflicts with the settlers. Prior to the arrival of Neviran settlers, indigenous groups had little in the way of ranged weaponry. Because of this, guns became very valuable to indigenous groups and settlers were encouraged by the colonial government to "promote infighting" as a means of protecting the colonies.

Balak rule

The territory of modern Kaiyyo was purchased by the Balak Empire in 1870. It formed part of the Southern portion of Balak's Herayan Territories.
