Saovia (Torzgenic:: Zugiz /zugiz/), officially the Republic of Saovia, is a country located in north-central Baredina, bordered by Barradiwa to its north, Azerin to its northwest, and Geltikai to its southeast. The nation has a long history with the oldest ruins inside its borders dating to at least 2700 BCE, though there is evidence that populations of humans have inhabited various sites throughout the country much earlier than that.

The country is largely known as a crossroads of oases, with the Ekuos serving as the main artery from which the nation's other known features spring; namely its historical reputation for being the hinterlands, frontier, or border march of countless empires throughout history thanks to its favorable geography lending to strong defenses.

In more recent centuries, the nation has been associated with a heavy boom economy centered primarily on coal mining especially amidst the industrial revolution which briefly led to it becoming one of the wealthiest realms per capita in Ekuosia, but the high economic turnout slowed significantly as coal reserves began to deplete. Some communities such as Cadohyev continue to thrive on the industry due to the sheer volume of coal in their vicinity, but others have since declined in quality of life and population; many towns have even been completely abandoned.

Etymology

The country is named directly after General Sao, a military officer and frontier governor under the First Neviran Empire who fought in the initial Neviran conquests to unite the region under the banner of Yisma and later worked hard to build a strong central identity for the area where previously there were many. He did this on the orders of the emperor of Nevira in an attempt to stymy rebellious sentiments in frontier provinces, but the efforts nonetheless had the unintended effect of bringing the diverse peoples of the area together and in the long-term gave the modern nation its foundation.

The native name in Torzgenic is ‘’’Zugiz’’’; ‘’Zu’’ being the translation of Sao, and ‘’-giz’’ meaning “land”.

History

Geography

The country is comprised primarily of a hot desert biome, being within the Baredina Desert, though there are a small number of savannas in the north along the borders with Barradiwa and Azerin and things begin to shift to arid rocky terrain in the south along the border with Geltikai. The hills leading up to the mountains in the west are interspersed with dry shrubland. Naturally, there are oases throughout the desert, and along the Ekuos one can find fertile and lush flood plains.

The northeastern portion of the country is regarded as one of the most inhospitable regions in the world. The native Linke people in the area have thus developed a culture and society around the extreme preservation and rationing of food and water.
