Viunze (IPA: /vi.ˈʌnz/, Illaine: Viunze, IPA: /vjunz/), officially the Free Association of Viunze, is a country located on the island of Vetes. It is separated to the east from Ammia and mainland Miraria by the Rude Strait, and shares sea borders with Sanpo to the south, Ohkoria to the west, and Mettat to the north. It is a protectorate of the Union of Šarkunen Nations and a member of the Trans-Miraria Railway and the Sahar International Football Association.

Etymology

The name Viunze comes from the Ancient Methinat spoken by the Mettat Empire in ancient times. The Ancient Methinat name was "wêtis-udənstám", meaning "Willow Island", named for either the island's widespread Salix atrocinerea plants or the alpine Salix lanata. This later became simplified to "wétunstam", then "wéuntsa", then "wiunza". This, in turn, was later adapted into Illaine as "Viunze".

History

Prehistory

The areas currently controlled by Viunze were populated by nomadic times in ancient times. Artifacts of early settlements have been found and dated to as far back as 3700 BCE. The language of these tribes, called Albian, was related to Ancient Methinat. Their language greatly influenced Illaine.

Methinat Rule

In the mid-first century, sometime between 1800 BC and 1700 BC, the Kingdom of Mettat took control of the region. Ancient Methinat became the predominant language, which is reflected in the fact that many place names have been derived from Ancient Methinat. One prominent example of this is Férsai.

Outside Influence

Between 200 BCE and 300 CE, Dansc tribes, who were related to the Thythisc, moved into the area. They intermingled with the Albians, and the area became a melting pot of cultures. Over time, the Methinat culture was ousted, and a mix of Vulgar Albian and Old Dansc became the predominant language, which eventually developed into Illaine. However, the area remained controlled by Mettat until May 1857.

Viunze Independence

In May 1857, Viunze gained its independence from Mettat via referendum. Consequently, the Viunze Republic was established.

Viunze Republic

Viunze was a democratic republic from May 1857 until July 2014. In March 2013, the economy collapsed, and inflation began to increase exponentially. By October 2013, the Viunze Coroné was worth practically nothing, with the exchange rate cr¤15 264,48 = US$1.

Coup d'etat

In July 2014, the Viunze Lynx Party staged a coup d'etat. With the widespread support of the public, they were able to take over the government without the use of violence. The government was dissolved, the Constitution of Viunze was written, and the congress was replaced with the Viunze Ting, which was only given the power deal with foreign policy and enforce the Constitution. A free association system was put into place.

Geography

Mont Néfe is the highest point in Viunze, with a height of 2,174 metres (7,133 ft).

Viunze lies between latitudes 34° and 41° N, and longitudes 14° W and 21° W.

To the south, Viunze shares a sea border with Ohkoria and Sanpo; on the north, it shares a sea border with Mettat; and to the east, it shares a border with Ammia along the Rude Strait.

Islands

Other than the main island of Vetes, Viunze has five islands. They are, from largest to smallest, Quéte, to the northeast; Acunze, to the northwest; Euvunze, to the southwest; Taque-deus-Dracons, to the southeast; and Férsiette just off the western coast.

Mountains

The Serre Mountains run vertically through the centre of Viunze. The tallest peaks are Mont Néfe (2,174 metres (7,133 ft)), Mont Péndre (2,146 metres (7,041 ft)), and Mont Corre (2,061 metres (6,762 ft)).

Climate

Most of Viunze has a Mediterranean climate, falling under the CSb and CSa Köppen climate classifications. However, part of the Eastern side of Viunze is drier, falling under the semi-arid BSk classification. This is due to the Serre mountains, which block some of the moisture from the ocean.

Biodiversity

Viunze is very diverse, with many species of flora and fauna residing in Vetis and the surrounding islands. The national bird of Viunze is the sieme (Xema sabini) and the national flower is the campanoue ville (Hyacinthoides hispanica).

Politics

Government

The government of Viunze is almost non-existent. It is primarily inspired by anarcho-communism. The government is controlled by the Viunze Thing, a parliament with 20 members, two from each division. They are picked randomly from the population of each division; a person who is picked may (and does often) decline, and a new person is picked in their place. They meet primarily to discuss foreign policy, and rarely to discuss domestic policy, such as laws. There are few national laws, as most laws are on the commune level. All laws are enforced by communes themselves.

The only laws are known as the Three Tenets:

• Slavery, in any form, is illegal.
• Intentional murder is illegal.
• Intentional cause of pain or hardship is illegal.

These laws apply in all communes, and are enforced by the communes. Interpretations of these three laws are free to be decided upon by each commune. If a commune is found to be not enforcing these laws, the commune will be treated as not part of the association, losing all benefits of Viunze's shared foreign policy, including imports and exports. However, this has never occurred.

In addition to these laws, the domestic laws of the Union of Šarkunen Nations are recommended to be followed, but are not enforced. However, due to ease, some are always followed. These are the addition of an "international zone" to Trans-Miraria Railway stations and driving being on the left-hand side.

Foreign relations

Viunze is a member of the Union of Šarkunen Nations. It has completely open borders, although due to the fact that many nations require passports for entry, citizens of Viunze are issued passports on request.

Military

Viunze has no official military, although many communes have organised militias, often shared between large groups of communes. They are usually only used (rarely) to enforce communal rules or break up violent situations.

Economy

The economy of Viunze is a gift economy. Currency is not used in peoples' daily lives, although there is currency, the Corone, which is used in international trade by the Thing and is organized via the Viunze Central Bank.

The Viunze Corone is a currency used primarily for international trade purposes, including exports and imports.

Transport

Viunze has a large public transport presence. Travel on the Viunze Rail System is completely free. In addition, with a passport, Viunze citizens can get free tickets for the Trans-Miraria Railway, as an agreement is in place giving Viunze free access to the railway in return for regular maintenance of all rail lines within its borders and annual payments from the Viunze Central Bank.

Energy

Most energy in Viunze is generated via nuclear power plants, hydroelectric dams, or natural gas power plants, although the latter's use is falling in favor of other forms of power generation.

Tourism

Tourism is common in Viunze. A large driver of tourism is the lack of drug laws and sex worker laws in many areas. In addition, Viunze's landscapes and beaches are common destinations.

Demographics

Language

The vast majority (95.96%) of Viunze citizens speak Illaine, while a small portion (3.87%) speak it as a second language to Ammaric.

Education

There is no official primary schooling system in Viunze, although nearly all communes use a K-12 system of schooling. Secondary schooling is also widespread, but not standardized.

Healthcare

All forms of healthcare are free. >90% of the population has a hospital within 15 miles of their home.

Religion

Religion is very common in Viunze; only approximately 15% of Viunze citizens are non-religious. This is in contrast with many of the countries of nearby Šarkunen, where non-religion is more common than religion. Iovism is the most common religion, accounting for about 45% of religious individuals, followed by Pašaism, accounting for about 25%.

Culture

Sport

The most popular sport in Viunze is football. The Le Lighe de l'Asociacion (The Association League), often shortened to simply Le Lighe, is the highest level of the Viunze football league system. Viunze is also a member of the Sahar International Football Association (SIFA, or in Illaine, l'Asociacion Internacionale de Foetbal de Écaiere).
