Etymology

Most likely an exonym based on Proto-Sangmian *suŋṃ "mountain".

History

Ancient and Medieval Period

In ancient times the area was occupied by warring tribes. The first millenium BC saw the forming of the first city states, first Keräk and Xandhash (modern Kräk and Haanzash) in the eigth century BC then WIP, WIP and WIP around the sixth century BC. By the fifth century BC Keräk exerted de facto rule over WIP and the desert nomads in the west, while Xandhash had WIP under it. Eventually Keräk and Xandhash warred, and after the Battle of WIP, Keräk conquered Xandhash and first united the Kingdom of Sangmia under the Keräk ruler, King WIP, in the third century BC.

In the beginning of the first century CE, King WIP died childless, and WIP from WIP took over. His son, WIP went in a expansionist spree, eventually suffering repeated heavy losses against the Bavkir warlords. Following the defeats and the raise in tax it entailed Keräk, WIP and WIP rose, but they failed to properly overthrow the WIP and the territory fragmented. Xandhash wound off particularly bad after this war, accounts having that it was burnt down twice. During the WIP period a Bavkir tribe actually conquered some land in Sangmia and established another city-state, WIP.

After the fragmentation of Old Sangmia there were various conflicts over Xandhash, considered holy land of Dohmism, the majority religion in all the leftover city-states from Old Sangmia. Xandhash remained changing hands until the second to third centuries CE, when Monk Jieenhaan gathered an army of Dohmist zealots and conquered Xandhash for good, establishing a Theocracy. Jieenhaan and his followers subscribed to a particular interpretation of the Dohmist tenets, which led to extensive militarization of Xandhash over the following centuries.

Xandhashi monks were used as mercenaries in Sangmian city states very thoroughly from the fifth century CE on. By the Twelfth and Thirteenth centuries CE it composed most their armies. After the Battle of WIP, when Xandhashi mercenaries in the WIP army turned against WIP while fighting another Xandhashi force, there was an effort to get rid of Xandhash mercenaries.
