Natlia (Lithian: [natli.a]), officially Natlia Metropolis, is the capital city of Lugida. The city is home to 11.6 million people (2016), the largest in Lugida and 3rd largest in Soltenna. It is located on the eastern mountainside of Mount Lenthir on Cape Titi towards the Bay of Natlia and the Sharkunen Gulf. Natlia comprises the southern part of the Annamidan metropolitan area which stretches north up to Kitlimis, whose urban agglomeration of 24 million people is one of the largest on Sahar.

Initially founded as a small Altha dynasty-era fishing settlement, Natlia was expanded into a city under Letsatian rule in Lugida when extensive deposits of silver was found in the mountainside. Avite Empire ruler Gaulitide, being of Natlian origin, proposed the city as the empire's new capital in 348 CE. The proposal, though implemented through development in Natlia, fell out of favor of Avite clergy. In the 10th century naval trade in Natlia had become extensive. Along with the Tori invasions of Lugida, it ultimately led to the founding of the Forian Kingdom, which designated Natlia as the capital of the Lenthiri Circuit. Economic activity declined following its dissolution on 1731 and the subsequent Melunair rule, then recovered after Shohuanese administration of coastal Lugida in early 19th century before suffering extensive damages during the Great Ekuosian War. In the post-war economic miracle that ensued, Natlia, already designated as the capital city, grew the most by economy and population.

Modern-day Natlia is a global city, with the largest metropolitan economy in Soltenna. It has grown rapidly following the Lugid economic boom in the mid to late 20th century, contributing to its metropolitan area's large GDP of around $1 trillion. Natlia boasts as one of the leading technology, cultural, and tourism hubs of Sahar, being the headquarters to Lugid conglomerates such as Wilith and Mitsetale.

Etymology

Natlia comes from the Lithian words natlan "Sun" and the derivational fia "of", literally meaning "of the Sun". This name has become the subject of multiple metaphors due to its vague direct meaning. Public consensus prefer the meaning "the rising sun" for Natlia, while other meanings such as "the city of the sun" is also used but are rare outside literary contexts.

Architecture

Historically, most buildings in Natlia bear Lugid architecture, which is predominantly made of wood and is heavily influenced by Qonklese architecture.

Culture

Economy

Natlia is the business and financial hub of Lugida. Despite having only around 0.1 percent of Lugida's land area, Natlia and its metropolitan area contributes to almost half of Lugida's nominal GDP. Service sector accounts for half of Natlian economy.

Natlia experienced a rapid rebuilding and economic growth from the 1960s, after sustaining severe damages from the Great Ekuosian War. Centralization of economic growth to Natlia caused large Lugid companies to move to the city in order to take advantage of the city's better access to the government. Through centralization and Lugida's export-oriented economy, Natlia later went on to become Soltenna's international financial center since the late 1960s amidst competition with other Soltennan cities such as Bosato and Cuáma.

The city's economic growth is challenged by increasing living costs, population density, and high real estate prices, thus inviting economic competition by other Lugid cities like Kirni and Dalshabet.
