The languages of Akulanen are dominated by the Ngerupic family. Almost all of the languages indigenous to the island, from the Terminian language of Amerhan (as well as Cerman and many other countries) with over 160 million speakers, to highly endangered languages such as Bilemã, are Ngerupic. The Tayam language of southeastern Awating is possibly an exception—some scholars consider it to be pre-Ngerupic, while others think it may have originated as a cipher or thieves' cant.
